Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

Personally, the neck pickup is absolute perfection for me. Bright and fat in just the right proportion, and very very articulate, which is hard to find in a jazz neck pickup.

The bridge pickup is a bit too thin and bright for me, and the mid bump is a bit too high frequency for my taste. That's why I'm considering replacing it with a Big Single. But that would involve routing and the Big Single would end up being 1/4" closer to the neck, which is where I would expect most of the difference to come from. If you just put another pickup in the same position, I don't see it being hugely different, and you could probably achieve the same effect with eq.

Well when I solo the bridge pup, cut the tone pretty much all the way, boost the bass--I get an articulate, jacoish tone.

But with both pups full on, I feel the tone has to be cut by at least half; otherwise, it's too bright.

So i am trying to get something rounder, bigger and not as bright.

Jeez go figure: You guys know I've been talking about ordering. FINALLY got my SB5k all spec'd out in my head and was a day or two away from calling Carvin and placing my order... and got laid off. Jinx? lol

Anyway, got the final specs all settled, so I'm looking forward to ordering when I get settled in a new job. :)

Arrgh! That's just wrong. So sorry to hear. What specs did you come up with? We'll think good thoughts over them....

I know, right? I'm trying to stay positive though, it may suck at this exact moment, but it's actually a good thing. I'd been thinking about moving on for a while anyway. :)

Here's the mockup I did that was the final deciding factor on specs:

and some details:
Ash body/maple neck
gold hardware/inlays on knobs
while pearl inlays (not the abalone diamonds in the mockup)
straplocks
Hipshot Detuner (since I've never had one)
V/V/T/B&T controls

So, specs nailed down after much MUCH (oh yeah... MUCH :p) consideration, just need to get settled in a new job.

This thread is killin' me!!! MAJOR G.A.S. Attack for the SB5000.

I was thinking about getting a nice bass and then I found these threads and now I'm thinking about how I'm going to pay for my nice bass..... I have to sell a couple things first but after the first of the year I should be able to order one. I'm really hoping there will be no price increases between now and then.

I think I'm going to go with
Maple neck/Alder Body with Honeyburst over Flame
Chrome hardware
Black Pickguard
Maple board with black dots
Matching Honeyburst over Flame Headstock

My only concern is the wide string spacing, I am playing a Cort B5 now and it has pretty tight spacing. Are these necks comparable at all to the Fender J V necks or is the spacing wider than an American J V?

Maybe I can find someone in Michigan that would let me check theirs out before I order. I promise not to get any drool on it! :)

Finger spacing on the currentl line of SB and B basses is 19mm which is FULL width...same as most 4 strings. I'm not sure of the Fender specs but I had an American Fender V and it had smaller spacing (maybe 18mm?). The 19mm spacing was one of the things I liked about these bases. I don't like 5 strings that feel cramped to me.

I really need to try out an SB5000 to see if I can deal with the spacing. I have an LB75 which has pretty narrow spacing (I think 17mm?) and am comfortable with that. I have been thinking that in honor of my LB75's 20th birthday, I should order a matching SB5000,Koa/Koa with ebony

I don't feel a difference between the 19 and 18mm at the nut (they may not be different but you can check those specs for comparing specific instruments). I do notice a difference between them at the heel of the neck. The 19mm spacing does translate into a slightly wider neck at the heel. That is where you will notice it.
