Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

Hi Jarrett. I always carry a large Auralex Gramma pad when I'm not familiar with the stage. I know that scientifically it would not stop the acoustic coupling, but it does seem to reduce stage vibration and some low end bleed into the drum mic stands. As a bonus, it also levels off an uneven surface!
I absolutely love the TC rig. I play rock and blues covers, use stainless steel rounds, and run the tweeter attenuator at 12:00. The coaxial tweeters are very smooth and go plenty high for me with blues and rock. Cabs are ported (rear) and have plenty of punch with warm bass. Low B only farts when I have the Tubetone on. A low C or D does not. Compressor is also smooth and easy to dial in. I like the Tubetone for Ampeg-like emulation and leave it on around 10:00 (35% on?). I leave a 112 and a 210 at the rehearsal space and will a 212 and 210 at home I can almost cover any gig without running to the rehearsal space. An RS212 + RS112 would be an amazing dub/reggae rig.
To sum it up, I stopped looking at amps/cabs when I got the TC gear dialed in. And I sold 4 basses when I got the Carvin SB5000!

Fretless SB5000 is very, very tempting. But I've only been playing a year+ and find that I get messed up going back to a 4 string (like my back-up P bass). I rely on the extra string a lot. So, first I need a second fretted and some lessons. Then I can justify getting a fretless!

The only SB5000 that I have played was Dave Siff's fretless. Great sounding/looking/feeling bass.

My passive white/ebony SB4000 with HB2 bridge humbucker, black PG & hardware is set to be completed in about a week. It will be my first fretted 4 string that I've bought (and kept) since 2004. Someone posted a pic of a trans pearl blue B40 in the last thread which was mine, but I sent back and it ended up on Carvin's in-stock page. It was a great bass, but I just decided that I prefer passive basses to active ones. The wait is killing me.

So far the fretless SB4000 has proven to be a stellar instrument. One of the best sounding, feeling, playing, most versatile basses i've ever owned... Gigging this weekend with it again! can't wait to see how it sounds in this new room we're playing.
I think the tradition is, every time a "club" thread like this rolls over you're supposed to re-post pics. So, here you go. This bass is so much fun. Just got a set of D'Addario Half-Rounds for her, but I'm slackin' about putting them on.
It depends on the kind of sound you're looking for, and how pristine you want to keep the fingerboard. A lot of people use flatwounds on fretless to prevent any string marks or damage. I prefer the feel and sound of rounds. My bass came with the Carvin nickels, and the fingerboard had string marks after a couple of days, but they're just cosmetic and I don't play enough to worry about any serious fingerboard wear. Ebony is pretty tough stuff. As mentioned above, I just got a set of half-rounds for my bass, figuring they're a good compromise between the sound/sustain of rounds and the smoothness of flats. I'm in no hurry to change strings, though.
If you want to use rounds and avoid marking up the fretboard, Carvin offers that "hard as nails" epoxy coating. That will change the sound a bit.
