Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 8!

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. It's just a little nerve racking to spend over a grand to build a bass you've never played. But I think I'm just gonna go for it.

I saw an ad for a 5001 pop up for almost 1300...I don't care for a chambered, one way or the other...so for that money, just build exactly what I want.

Whew. How do you guys like the custom pick guard? I'm pretty sure I'm going to leave it on, although the white one is rather striking. I added the picture with no pick guard for completeness, but I am not considering orphaning that control plate!

Awesome new bass - congrats! I'd def pick the clear guard.

I am torn between an SB5000 and an active Fender Jazz deluxe 5. the reason is because whatever I get has to record well and I have never used a carvin to know. I was curious, for example if anyone who has tracled with Fenders can compare it to carvins. Example : I can have both pups boosted and the tone rolled off a little, and get an awesome tone out of my MIA Fender Js that just sits right in the perfect spot.

The other thing I like about the Fender Deluxe is the mid boost. I know you can get a mid sweep, but boosting mids is a pretty sweet option on a jazz bass.

Of course, with the SB5000 I can solo the bridge and then add lows back in with the EQ. I was wondering how that sounded, and if anyone does that?

I know this bass has a pretty hot output, so I just wanted to really get opinions for tracking on if this thing is truly studio worthy. Any other session cats who use this professionally I would love to hear from you.

So torturous because I can't actually play one..lol. But if it helps, I really do not dig Sadowsky metros too much or Skyline JOs/DJs in comparison to the Fender J Deluxe. I currently record with a Fender Roadworn J as my passive 4 string of choice and it is absolutely top notch in the studio. Just want an active version of it in a 5er.

I ordered my 2nd SB5000 yesterday. First one (white / tort / rosewood) was too heavy and went to my kid. The 2nd one (sunburst / white pearl / maple) was ordered with a request to pick a light weight body blank.

The problem is build time was quoted as 10 weeks. YIKES

Ewo, you're right, it's not on the bass builder online. I knew it was an option because I'd seen it before on some other TBer's SB. When I called my order in (never just use the website), I simply asked for it. It showed up on my build sheet as

IPH - ICON HEADSTOCK - $20.00

Well worth it, IMHO.

I think MOP blocks would look fantastic on a rosewood board with a white body and pearl pick guard.
