Carvin vs. Mesa Cabs

So, in other words, you haven't played any of those cabs, don't use a bass rig, and haven't experienced any of Carvin's PA gear, either - but figure, "hey, they make PA gear, so they must be good at bass gear, too"

"Maybe you should take some reading courses ..... "

( a citation taken from a well famous poster around here )

Well, I see everyone is passionate about this.

I just bought and on its way, a Carvin BX1500.

I've played through all the holy grails and recently a Mesa Scout and Mesa Carbine M3 Combo. They could not be any more different from each other except they both are smokin' combos.

I've never played through a Carvin amp... I'll let you know what I think.

And I quote:
"The B2000 delivers 700w at 8 ohms, 1300w at 4 ohms and 2050w at 2 ohms. All this power is housed in a 2 rack space lightweight 14 pound chassis. Class A input stages produce the harmonic basis for the preamp right from the input jack. It begins with a boutique flat response, then we add 6 tone controls for you to carve out your signature sound. Harmonic content increases as you turn up the Drive control producing a growl at maximum settings. A 12AX7 preamp tube yeilds warm tube harmonics, which is switchable in/out of the preamp circuit.".

As you can see, the B2000 puts out more power at 8 ohms than the GK700RB does at 4 ohms. At 4 ohms it's more than double and at 2 ohms it's more than triple. This thing could drive two power hungry 4x10's and still XMAX them both to death! Yeah I know what XMAX means!! Speaking of, where's RPSANDS lately?

Just a side note......and not considering I know anything about Mesa replacement parts or service.....but when my guitard stepped on my guitar cable and it pulled down on the input jack at the amp, it cracked the cheesy pre circuit board. Mind you this was an Carvin R600 series II that I had just bought brand new. When I went back to Carvin for replacement, they didn't have a replacement circuit card, but they would give me $100 for my amp towards a new series III at full price.

With the frequency that they change their amps you may find yourself in the same situation sometime. Although I repaired mine myself by bypassing the buffer on the input, i never felt it was reliable.

As far as their speakers go, R series were junk, B series were not much better. I did have a BRX410 for a while, sold that and bought a peavey 4x10 and never looked back. The problem I had with the BRX was they would lose low end with higher volume and always sounded bland.

It is kinda funny to me that people keep referring to Mesa as "Boutique". They have been around for 40 years. They make a lot of models. They are more expensive than Carvin. However most Ampeg heads are more than Mesa! Mesa Doesent even havea a bass head that more than $2000. Unlike Orange, Electric, Verellen, Reeves Matamp etc.
