Double Bass Case for Wizzy 10

For those of you using a Wizzy 10 and wanting some sort of case to protect the speaker, I've just come up with a relatively affordable solution that I think is going to be very effective. Today, I purchased a very heavily padded tom tom drum bag made in the U.K. by Protection Racket. It is a 14 X 16 bag that has an interior diameter of 16 inches and a height of 17 inches. The speaker fits into the bag very snugly with the cabinet handle on the side, and there is enough room on one side of the speaker to fit my AI Focus, and on the other side of the speaker to fit the power cord and two speaker cables. I haven't figured out exactly what I'm going to do for a shoulder strap, but Protection Racket sells one that simply clips onto the well padded side handle on the bag. I'm thinking one of my old shoulder straps from a bass bag will give me the kind of length I want for this and work out well.

I don't know if the drum bag manufacturing folks adhere to sizing standards, but an interior diameter of 16 inches coupled with an interior depth of 16 to 18 inches would be just right. If the drum bag had been one inch taller I could have put the Focus in its protective case on top of the speaker, leaving room down the sides for music, extension cords, etc. I'm very impressed with the quality of the Protection Racket bag with its high quality sewing and use of dense foam padding for terrific protection for its contents.

I would imagine a floor tom fiberboard case with some foam would work, have a handle and even have a little room for cables too. I use a fiberboard case for bongos for my cables and pedals and etc. It was something like $30 and have years of use and protection for my small stuff. The companies that make fiberboard drums cases ought to look into making cases for small amps. The stuff is light and strong and with a layer of foam would be great protection.

I wondering if the old original Mac computer bags would work, seems like they would be close in size. They were heavily padded and strong shoulder strap for carrying.

Here is the tom tom bag that I bought,

and the price in US dollars vs. British pounds are 1) a bit depressing when sitting in Scotland, or 2) exhilirating when you're in the U.S. I paid 42 GB pounds for mine, and the pound is currently $2.01.

The Meinl Cajon Bag does indeed look it might be perfect in two of the dimensions and generous enough in the third to leave room for the Focus and other stuff you want to carry with the speaker. I checked out their web site and they make a deluxe version that looks comparable in quality to the Protection Racket bags--the American Music Supply page is Invalid Link Removed. I'm very impressed with the Protection Racket quality, and would not want a fibreboard case for a bunch of the reasons mentioned in the PR web site. The Protection Racket website--http://protectionracket.com/indexsite.htm--talks about custome size bags, and this was the reason I contacted them in the first place. Unfortunately the website is out of date and they no longer do any custom work. The site does describe their quality in good detail however. I wouldn't want the larger PR bag that Freddels mentioned since the speaker would be too loose in the bag. Oh, and the old Mac bag is not big enough in one direction--it is basically the same size as the GK MB bags, of which I have two different versions, and neither will fit the Wizzy 10.

I would say swap meet or thrift shop Apple quit making computers in that shape and then came out with laptops so I haven't seen a bag like that in awhile. I still have mine somewhere in the house.

After posting this morning I went looking to see if anyone still make the fiberboard cases for amps like they used to. They were cheaper and lighter than ATA cases and perfect for use around town or occasional flying, but even those seem to of dried up too.

This Cajon case looks perfect. But it might be too short in one dimension. My W10 is 12.5 in on one side. Anyone willing to try it please post the results, because it is possible to tear up the W10 (I dinged one of mine...something scraped thru the vinyl and took a pinch of plywood. If it fit I'd buy these cases right off.) I think the W10 is worth keeping in a case like this.

I got the Mac bag in a used computer store. It accommodates my GK MicroBass combo with space left over for cables, but not my DIY speaker. What my DIY speaker fits into is a thing called a "pack 'n' roll," sold at office supply stores.

The Mac bag dates back to when the original Mac was so expensive that having one at home and at work was inconceivable. And of course Apple would only offer a Mac with a separate display over Steve Jobs dead body. People would literally lug the entire Mac back and forth.

I misunderstood. The GK is now gone to fund a Clarus III:D .
I'll look for one of these "pack 'n' roll" things.

The same!

Note that it is not super durable. I had two, and one of them eventually disintegrated. Mind you, it probably happened in subzero weather going down a curb.

Just curious:
What's wrong with the backpack for the wizzy 10?

Getting from the vehicle to the gig in ONE TRIP is what we call the 'Gig Olympics' in these parts.

Last night I did a gig using both a wizzy and an AI contra EX.

I stacked both cabs plus a stool on a small-folding handcart,
(The ones with bigger wheels) and rolled them with my bass on a wheel from the parking lot to the club. I just used a short bungie to hold up the backpack straps secure so they wouldn’t drag.
But I could have just put the wizzy on my back and carried the EX in my left hand if not for the stool.
For a short time I used a padded tom case for the EX. IMHO I don't think a drum case offers more protection than the wizzy backpack YMMV .
And the price is the about same as these cases metioned.

(BTW put on it's side the contra will fit in the wizzy backpack.)

Just curious really...

Hopefully nothing will be wrong with the backpack in the future, but at the moment, the backpack is not available. I'm told by a dealer that the size of the first run of backpacks was a little on the skimpy side so that getting the speaker into the backpack was a bit of a struggle, and that EA is making some changes on the next run of them. Plus, it was designed so that the EA Micro 300 amp would fit in an exterior pocket. Since I'm looking for a case large enough to include my Focus as well, this makes the backpack a non-starter even if it was available.

Hi Lownote;
Sorry I wasn't aware of this. Actually mine isn't too tight if that is what the dealer meant, just snug and it has stretched since I got it. In backpacker mode I have the focus in the original case, long strap over left shoulder, amp in case under my right armpit. Bass neck on right shoulder. Right hand steering the bass wheel left hand for opening doors. The wizzy backpack has the cables, tuner, and rosin etc. in the side pockets and a quality extension cord wrapped to the backpacks top handles. I guess what I saying is, that I don't miss not having the amp + head in one bag to be a 'one trip wonder'. But I do see your point. Hopefully they’ll get the backpacks retooled soon.

I bought one today at OfficeMax. It has a zippered bag on the back that would work great for a small head and cables. It is barely big enough for the little cab. I was hoping to have more room for a folding music stand or other misc gear. My wife fought me for it to use for filing, so I'll keep looking.

For my next build, maybe I will side-port it, so I can store my folding music stand in the port!
