Once you build a beautiful one-of-a-kind instrument with a unique shape, how do you find a case for it? It seems to me that it would be rather difficult to find an accommodating case or bag for a lot of what you guys come up with.

i would take it to a art handling/shipping place, explain your situation and have them give you a drawing of how to make a foamed out custom crate that has the inside lined with flannel

Not too many grunge builds these days requiring flannel....LOL

You can also contact a company such as cabbage cases, inc. to build one for you, but don't look for it to be inexpensive. They build road and flight cases for national acts/media for their gear.

The standard case I use for all my basses is the Gator Semi-Hardshell Foam case. It's light, and it fits every bass I've ever wanted to carry. I ship basses in this case and have never had one fail to protect the instrument 100%.

The deluxe case I use is a Gator ATA Hardshell case. I use one to carry my $4500.00 F-Bass BNF-5 wherever I need to and it is a great case for an upgrade!

The semi-soft is around $99.00 to $120.00 / the ATA is $120.00 to $150.00 depending on where you shop.

I've played around with some original designs, but - for this very reason - have so far tried to keep them within the outline of a Fender Jazz. Then I know they'll fit in a standard case.

I just built 3 Ata cases...

Last year i had to fly from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Quito, Ecuador.. so i decided to build myself two ATA flight cases.
3/8" (10mm) Plywood (Eucayptus)
2" Polyethylene foam all around the bass.
Aluminum extrusions an all...

The case with the bass inside weights 50 lbs aprox. yeah.. it´s heavy.. but. you know what.. there could be a thermonuclear war and my bass would be safe.
I guess the airport baggage handlers could drop the case from 4 or 5 feet height, and the bass wouldn´t even notice...

The best about building your own cases is the money you spend...
As i said, i built 2 cases for bass and i also built a case for my head amp.. Everything for U$280... yeah.. I dunno how much could it cost in you country. .
Retali price for a case like this one is U$ 300 in my country.

So.. if you can build your own case.. just do it.. it´s easy and you won´t regret.
