Oh, don't think I didn't think about it. Problem is that I don't have the tooling for worm gears. Otherwise, I probably wood. I stripped down a set of Schaller DaVinci tuners a few weeks ago and learned exactly how one would make them, but worm gear tooling is very pricey.

I've done tuners before, but for headless. I've also done custom buttons. I just don't care to do the worm gears :)

Then I got to work on the "nut". Since there is a zero fret, this guy will just act as a string spacer/guide, so the slots are supposed to be a little deep. Because of the slant, I cut a couple of guide blocks, put it in the mill, and roughed in the slots with end mills (1/8", 1/16", and 1/32"):

Then a little file work in a small vise inside of a bigger vise:

I also ordered the tuners: licensed Hipshot Ultralites in satin chrome. I still need to wind the pickups and buy pots. And keep oiling the body. I'm going to go with Tru Oil to get some nice sheen on it, since the figure pops amazingly.

That makes me think I should maybe look At what it would take to make my wood lathe be able to function as a pickup Winder. Any chance you could take a couple of photos for me when you get your set up in place?

Sure thing. I have an old piece of steel scrap that is polished that I use as a guide rod. My lathe has a DC variable speed so I can start very slowly and then ramp up. I will be using an inductive proximity sensor that I got off ebay for like $5 or something as a counter. I'll take photos once it's set up and ready to roll (or wind, whatever :) ).
