changing a cabs ohm rating ????

Picked up a gk neo 4x10 at a good price but having trouble finding 8ohm amps that can push 800 watts. Is it possible to change the ohms of the amp so I can have a better choice of amps to choose from. If not what amp would you recommend, under 1k...
 
Nevermind the 800w cab rating. Any 800w amp will push it to fart out.

There could be a chance to convert the wiring if the individual speakers are series parallel 8ohm. Don't do that. You get a 2ohm cab which will pop any unsuspecting 4 ohm amp plugged into it unless all the drivers blow first.

Getting all the watts out of the amp is a misguided pursuit.

Your choice with an 8 ohm 410 is either 8 ohms (how currently wired) 32 ohms or 2 ohms, neither of the later two are of much value.

I don't think you are going to find may options for 800 watts into 8 ohms unless you are willing to look at some of the older, heavier amps that can be bridged, or the rare amp that has that kind of power (not very common back in the good 'ol days)

Do you have an amp currently? In practice, I think you will find amps that can deliver ~400 watts (RMS) into 8 ohms will get most of the possible performance out of that cabinet without leaving much performance on the table. This will be a MUCH easier task, and you will have MANY moore options (new and used).
 
I was thinking about that then I looked on the back and the 800w for 4 and 2 ohm, and just about every amp below 1k is configured the same way....
Correct, and like I said earlier... any amp that is ~400 watts RMS into 8 ohms will get most of the real world performance out of a cabinet like that. Even GK's own amps are rated in much the same way, and would be another good option.

You should get a 400w amp at 8ohm max to help prevent cabinet burn out.

so i have a rumble 500 now, how do you think it would handle the gk neo?

The Rumble 500 head will deliver 350 watts into a 8 ohms load, and deliver the full 500 watts into a 4 ohms load.
Your 410 will work fine with your amp. If you need more volume, add another 8 ohms cabinet, preferably another 410. This will present the 4 ohms minimum that the amp can safely be operated at.

I hope you aren't thinking that since a cabinet has a power rating that you must have an amp of the same power: that just isn't so. And the concept of "underpowering" causing damage to a speaker is a myth.
The power rating on an amp is how much energy it can deliver into a load (speaker).
The power rating on a cabinet is the supposed maximum amount of energy it can sustain (possibly for a very short time) from an amplifier.

that clears some things up for me because that's exactly what I thought. I emailed GK and they basically told me that 8 ohm cab are usually when you want to run 2 or more cabs. The pricing on this gk neo was so good i couldnt pass it up, I'm sure i can sell it for a profit and get a higher wattage 4 ohm cab, but I always wanted something from GK...

You don't need a higher wattage 4 ohms cabinet. You aren't going to overpower that cabinet with that head.
I made the same mistake in your logic when I bought my 4 ohms cabinet. Now I can't add another cabinet to my amp. Luckily I'm not playing gigs that require more than what I've got.
Using one 8 ohms cabinet is just fine for the vast majority of situations. Adding another cabinet is only necessary if you need more overall volume, say for an outdoor gig.

Just one other data point.
It's very possible to have an inefficient 4 Ohm cabinet that is not as loud as an efficient 8 Ohm cabinet with the same amp, although I think the folks that posted above were rightfully thinking "all things equal".
