It's "intonation".

It is best to do a proper set up, including intonation, when you change strings. But you can probably get by without setup if you are replacing the existing strings with the same brand and gauge. It may not be spot on, but you might well find it within tolerable limits.

String it up, tune it and play the octaves at the twelfth fret fretted and the harmonics into a tuner. If something is out of tune, the intonation needs adjustment.

(told you, I'm a newb, haha.) The strings were given to me, so I'd probably have to get it set up, or learn to do it myself.

If you have a tuner, a Phillips head screwdriver and the proper allen keys, you can do a setup if you go slow and read the guide carefully.
Scientists trained a monkey to MIG weld, you can set up a bass.

Paying someone is not a bad route, because they are expected to stand behind their work, and if you have reservations, this is the best way to go, but there's no really good reason that you couldn't do it yourself.

I want to learn to do it myself, because I want to always be able to do this. I just read through the guide, and setting the intonation seems pretty easy. I just got a set of some strings that were used by someone else, but not for long, so I might try them out and see if I like them. If I don't I'll pick up a new set.
