Not too shabby. I’d kick the tires.

Yeah. His skills make it a little tough to tell what some of us would sound like on that instrument ;)
I've had the chance to play one at a local GC. To me, it sounded generic and I put it back after a few minutes. :( There are so many similar active basses with EMGs that are available that it wasn't anything special. They were asking $1,500 for it, but I wouldn't pay more than $700 for that bass. Charles Berthoud is a virtuoso and a bass YouTube phenomenon, but his name alone does not justify the price.

Yeah, I agree there. Tough ask if you look at what Ibanez offers for that price.

Interesting that they had a 5 string when it’s only available for preorder. What made you come to the conclusion that it wasn’t worth the asking price? Fit and finish wasn’t good? It’s a neck thru model so $1500 isn’t that surprising. Lots of Ibanez options at that price point and they’re bolt on.

$700 doesn’t buy much anymore. Squiers are near $700 these days.

The Ibanez BTB805MS-TGF is fanned fret, multi scale and neck through and is at 1400. For a 100$ more, you can get a headless (bolt on tho). The fanned fret SR mutliscale with bolt on is 1100 and the one with Fishman pickups is 1300. The SR Premiums with super fancy woods and cool finishes are 1600.

I don't know why so many companies fail to list a very important spec the Bridge String Spacing. Especially on a 5 string where that is import. For me at a min it would need to be 18mm (19mm being the standard Fender spec). I would never consider buying that bass without knowing that spec. Sure you can probably contact them to get it......but geez, just add it to the specs!!

Side note, I think any bass he picks up will sound great!

Looks a lot like the C-5 GT model I have my eyes on (used 800-900) except the GT has an ebony fretboard and comes in red, blue and purple. I like EMG
and the width of Schecter's 35" scale 5s. Also love Berthould's music regardless of scorching technique.

Yes. Absolutely maddening why a few companies still do this.

He is an extraordinary player. But, in 60 years as a bassist I have never had any desire to achieve the tone he demonstrates, and nothing contained in either of these videos gives me the slightest idea of what one of these basses might sound like in my hands.

I can understand your point. The tone is clean and processed, and doesn’t strike me as having what I would call “character.” YouTube pro demo players can fall into this category. Nate Navarro is a monster player, but I always feel like his demos are cleaned up. Patrick Hunter’s sounds also seem processed in a way that alters the character of what he’s demoing.

In this case, and as someone with an EMG loaded bass, I’d still like to give the bass a test. My gut is that I wouldn’t be blown away by the tone, but I might be satisfied with it. I’d probably be more interested in how it plays and the fit and finish.
