My band is headed into the studio this weekend for a 2 track session. I will have my L-1000s (2019 reissue and 1984 original), my Trace Elliot GP12 Series 6, and my cabinets (Avatar 210 and Ashdown 15). I told the engineer the other night that I'd use whatever they had there, but he said to bring my gear.
I have recorded with my stuff in the past and though the tones I've gotten are adequate, that's all they are: adequate. And there's nothing wrong with that, you know? But what I want is something where when I listen, I say, "Dang, that's killer tone."
Live, I've been going for a pretty aggressive, picked sound. I use the AGS circuit on my THDI and get some overdrive, and sometimes even boost that via a Spark Boost in front of it. The two songs we're doing are fast rockers, and I want to have an upfront sound.
I'm a sucker for when the band drops down to bass and drums and you get the bass by itself. It's got to have personality. Then again, maybe I'm overthinking things.
I'm listening to a song we did last year. It's me and my L-1000 and I think I played it through one of those baby Ampegs. Listening back, it's a nice tone and I approve. Maybe it's a mix thing, but I feel like I need more. Maybe? Maybe something close to this or just a *little* bit hairier will work. What do y'all think?? You can hear just bass and drums in the intro, and then with jangly guitar over the rest.
