Cheap Amp Head

I'm looking for a cheap amp head, something between 150 and 400 watts

Something to suit my cab;
4x8
400 Watts RMS
8ohms
Regular speaker jack as well as speakon jack


Its not going to be used for gigging (not with this cab anyway)
Any suggestions?
*note: i live in Australia, everything is more expensive over here due to currency exchange, import, distribution etc

If you are looking for bang for the buck I would pick up a Hartke 3500. You can pick them up used for nothing, they are solid, reliable, sound good, plenty of power. It's waht I have as my back up "failsafe"...

If you are looking for a cheap and powerful bass head, you might look at the Behringer BX4500H Ultrabass. Here in the US they cost less than $250.00 new.

I had an earlier version of this same head which had 300 watts (you might be able to find this one used on eBay), but I sold it after less than a year. The amp worked fine but it didn't have the "old school" sound that I go for and I couldn't get it even using my Tech 21 Sansamp.

If I hadn't already had a few amps to keep at home, I would have kept the Behringer for the exact purpose you described.

I bought an Ampeg SVT head and its been my main big-gig amp since then.

A couple of weeks ago I picked-up a new G.K. MB2-500 head for $499.00 U.S.
Not sure what the price would be in Australia, but I can say, it sounds great and it's 3.8 lbs. of pure dynamite!
Rated at 350 watts at 8 ohms, 500 watts at 4 ohms. "Full power" is 580 watts at 4 ohms.

Careful, last time i mentioned the B word on TB i nearly got my head ripped off :P

i am thinking of the BXR1800H but even this less powerful model is around $340 here. how much of a rip off is that. and thats a mates rate price.

Hope you find this useful. I've excluded Behringer for obvious reasons. But for $399.99 you can get a Bugera 550 watt tube head. I'm sure it only has tubes in the preamp though.
