Cheap backup head - thoughts?

old peavey will last forever, and take anything you throw at it. And can be had dirt cheap.

Another old Peavey. I have a one of these with the white faceplate and it is loud. I never find myself turning the master past 3.

I saw the title and HAD to chime in. Used Peavey all the way! They're incredible workhorses, and after MUCH abuse they still perform. They're also very serviceable should something happen to it. They're so well built that the techs I've talked with LOVE working on them.

I would suggest looking for a used one as well. I lucked out, got a Trace Elliot 200w head with a Sabine rack tuner in a Rocktron bag style rack for $200 on Ebay. It also works great for home recording

For backup, an iron Peavey could probably tolerate bad power and other real world conditions. In other words, consider the probably cause of what took out your primary head.

Peavey is what you want. Saw a Firebass on local craigslist for $250. Thats 700 watts into 2 ohms or, i think, 450 watts at 4 ohms into your 2 avatar cabs, or 300 into 8 ohms.


I think those are the specs....
You just have to be patient and check your local Craigslist and www.musicgoround.com also offers shipping. They have killer deals.

Thank you for all the input. I now have it narrowed down between a new GK Backline 600 and some sort of used Peavey. You used Peavey fans, any specific models come to mind? Anyone here familiar with the the Tour 450?

My priorities, in order, are: 1. solid state; 2. price (*under* $300 out-tha-door); 3. power; 4. weight. I am rocking two 500W 8-ohm cabs. Passive axe.
