Cheap Bass

I'm looking to get a cheap bass just for when I'm spending my time away from the dorm. Any recommendations? As long as it doesn't sound too awful and is cheap, I'm all for it. To clarify cheap: I mean >200.

Out of curiosity, do you know how Squiers compare to the SX basses?

Well I just bought the 6th squier Classic vibe i have owned, all have been great I have had 2 of each of the 3 different models, I also have had 3 affinity squier P bass, 2 squier MIJ SQ bass, 2 squier vintage modified jazz basses both fretless and fretted , the squier vintage modified tele bass , and 3 of the squier vintage modified squier P basses.

I am prob missing one or two. I have had alot of squiers.

I have had 3 Sx's , 2 were total crap with misaligned bridges , 1 that I got used for 60$ was beat to hell but it was a GREAT bass.

There are good SX's but I feel squiers come with better quality control and rather have a used but nice squier vintage modified bass for around 150$ then a SX new for 100$.

there is a white VM P bass on guitar cneters website 150$ + the usually charge around 25$ to ship , they also have a squier Cv in blue for 200$+ shipping

Don't buy used instruments on eBay.

I've learned that one the hard way. Bought a used G&L L2K, came in awful condition, disputed with the seller, got my cash back. Waited a few months, and bought a new USA L2K. eBay isn't very instrument friendly.

Try the pawn shops.

All these above recommendations are good ones. I have one SX now, but have owned three from rondomusic.com. All were very playable.

Currently have a Peavey Fury--great bass, paid $50 and a used practice amp for it at a pawn shop. This is a Precision copy.

Also have a Peavey Foundation. Now THAT's a bass. Paid $130 for it at a pawn shop.
The Foundation is a jazz copy. I prefer the Super Ferrite version, but others seem to like the newer pickups.

I'd get an older Peavey, get a hold of MNAirhead on Talkbass and have him set it up (he does it for the fun of it) and let it rip. I think he sometimes sells a few as well. Worth asking him.

The older Peavey's are USA made, have thin fast necks and play great. Can usually find them for well under your budget. I have another Fury in the garage that I am refinishing that I got for $100 on Craigslist.

Used Peaveys are great deals that can be had for <200. But there's a hell of a lot more options available for >200.

Not bashing SX or Squier, but either of those would be my choice for that price...
