I've used the search and all, and found nothing that seems to answer what I want. Well, I'm thinking of getting a cheap EUB, and need some suggestions, as MF and GC all have a Dean for under $500, and that's all. I'm looking to spend $500 or less, and something that sounds like an upright bass, as I heard the Dean was a bit too treble-y.

Double Bass Cheap Beginner EUB?

I'd scour the classifieds here and on Craigslist for an older NS WAV4. Pretty highly regarded and can be had relatively cheap. I got mine for $650 here in the classifieds about a year ago.
A used Ergo EUB would be a good bet. These regularly pop up for around 500 in the classifieds. I used to have one, it was pretty cool.
The problem with the Dean isn't that its too trebbly, its that its not really an EUB. It doesn't have the full scale length, has a flat fingerboard so can't be bowed or played with double bass technique, and takes bass guitar as opposed to double bass strings. Its just a fretless sideways, which is fine if thats what you want. You seem to want something closer to an acoustic double bass, so get something that is built like and plays like a double bass.

There's the Palatino, but it seems to need a few hundred dollars in mods, so maybe not much attractive.

I had a Palatino EUB that i liked but sold it just recently. Had barely played it since I got my upright acoustic. With the Palatino, it's best to put foam under and over the pickup, and some have had problems with a rattle in the tailpiece. You should be able to find a used one at a decent price, new they sell for around 670 to 750.
I recently bought a Stagg EUB through eBay for $599, which included shipping to Hawaii. A decent bass for the price, and has a real 3/4 upright scale length and fingerboard, allowing you to "arco"(bow) if you want to. You can find videos on youtube on the Stagg, as well as the Palatino. after watching several, and reading forums etc., I chose the Stagg, as I thought the sound was good. Am enjoying playing it.
