I think pitch is possibly, perhaps probably, partially the pertinent problem, in the presence of a plethora of pernicious pitch pockets.

So far, every piece of that bass has been considered as a hypothesis for why it won't hold pitch. Have we left anything out? Maybe the end pin is slipping, so the bassist's left hand is sliding towards the nut as the bass sinks into the ground. Maybe the oboist is an alcoholic, and the orchestra tuned to her oboe while she had a high concentration of ethanol in her breath. Now her oboe is going sharp as she dries out over the course of the rehearsal, making it seem like the bass is going flat. Perhaps monstrous amounts of rosin are caking up on the strings.

All we can do at this point is wait for the answer.

UPDATE...

I just got the answer today about the pesky pitch problem.

Fortunately, it was not structural, but instead a nylon tailgut that just kept stretching and stretching. It was replaced with an aircraft steel cable. I'll know at Monday's rehearsal if that did the trick.

Isn't there a joke about perfect pitch being when you through the banjo/accordion/trombone/etc. into a dumpster without hitting the sides?
