Double Bass cheap out for bluegrass bass set up

i know this sounds looney ,, but my wife was wanting a small amp to use in some of her gigs with the bluegrass band she plays with,, and something light enough she could tote around also,,,, i ran across this johnson 30B amp with a 10" speaker for 139.00 bucks. brought it home and hooked up her fishman EQ and pluged it in............
after a little adjusting to the amp and EQ i am amazed how loud and natural this thing sounds,,, plenty loud for a bluegrass band and monitor for her and got out cheap too....
i am wondering what it would sound like with a nice eminence or celestion or blackwidow in it,, it is only 30 watts but its punchy and plenty of head room. only weighs 22 lbs and built pretty well...

oh by the way she plays a 57 C-1 kay with black labellas.

i guess you never know till you try one and see,, but i think its gonna be just right for her.

For a little more you could get a much better and more reliable bass combo amp, say the GK MB110, or a similar offering from Carvin. More power, more pro features, and way better sound. Throwing more $$$ at the Johnson would not be a great idea...they say 30 watts, I'd wager that it's probably more like 15. I've seen these Johnson amps for 80 bucks at my local store. Just sayin'....

at tax time 200 dollars more is quite alot for us,,, plus she only uses it occasionally,, most gigs they do have sound waiting on them,, but once in a while they have to bring their own... and i agree the GK MB110 is the way to go for small venues on acoustic stuff,,, i played through on at the music store here close to the house and it was so nice!!!!!!

at most places they do but alot of the better paying gigs are private parties and things like that and they need their own sound,,, they just use a small pa with 4 mic inputs and she wanted a little more pop in the bass.. they played a gig saturday nite in a restuarant and it sounded perfect,, dialed that sucker in and you could hardly tell it was amped up. it sounded very natural and blended in just right.

A married bass playing couple? Knowing.my wife, she would always be glomming my favorite bass and then justify "it's so much BETTER than my basses!".
