Cheap Punk Bass

I'm new to bass, but I'm looking for a decent setup to play in a punk band. I've got some guitar experience but hardly any bass experience. I will mostly be playing with a pick. What's a solid bass at a decent price? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a nice beginner bass that will get the job done.

I've been looking at Rondo basses. I've heard they're pretty great considering the price. Anyone have experience with them?

Now obviously there are many components of a good tone, so any recommendations for other gear (eg strings, picks, amps, effects, etc.) wold be GREATLY appreciated.

Well if you're going to be doing shows the acoustic 200w combo or stack would probably work. Or are you just gonna be doing some jamming and having fun?

Cheap, solid amp? Look no further than a Fender Rumble series amp. I have the 75, and the 30 seems like a good little amp. What size amp does the guitar player use?

Squier VM Precision is indeed a good choice. Rondo is another decent choice. I love my SX P/J... sounds damn good stock. Just change the strings. My personal favourite are D'Addario Chromes but if you want to go with roundwounds I'm a big fan of Ernie Ball Custom Gauge Super Slinkys.

I had to widen the hole for the E string's anchor point on the bridge though.

In the end it's whatever you like... go try as many as you can.

I'm just looking to play some basement shows, so I don't need anything huge, but something that can compete with a guitarists' half stack. That Acoustic 200w looks pretty nice.

Oh yeah, if they've got a halfstack your gonna either have to keep it at decent volume (how punk would that be?) or get a decent sized amp.

If you want that hot grindy punk sound, d'addario pro steels will get you there,especially with a squier VM p bass.

Try the Ashdown MAG series, they have fantastic combos that you can expand with an extra cabinet. And they will fit in your style very well.

I think they are the bang for the buck in the amp world!

And go with the Squier VM PBass. I have one and it's amazing!

I'd get a squire P, you most definitely want some bright rounds on it though for that punchier tone. Acoustic amps are nice imo and 200w is more than loud enough for small stuff.

Just played through an Ashdown last night for the first time at an open mic. It sounded perfect for what you'll be doing. Squier VM's are the best basses you can get for the money you pay right now. Epiphone competes really well too, maybe a Thunderbird IV

They are great. I have the MAG C115-300 Evo II combo, and this thing rocks..

I did a Squier Dirnt bass and upgraded the bridge , the pickup, lighter strings and better pots. Killer jammer.
