Cheapest amp you actually think as character

Cheapest amp with decent tone ... for me it has to be the old Peavey "Redline" Basic 112. With an SRX2EX it was very clear, very 'hi-fi' sounding, and pretty loud for the tiny wattage, and made an excellent hard rock recording setup. With a Fender P it could also be dialed into an excellent smooth blues amp with no boomy bottom. I was pretty surprised. I paid $75 for it, iirc.

The B100R has character in spades. It is often thought of as a poor man's B15 - and it does pretty much nail the tone - but it really is a classic in its own right. Because of its expanded EQ section and a couple more bells and whistles, it can go into territory that is a little beyond a "real" B15. I have two - one I bought new, the other used for $200. A friend of mine bought one with a bad input jack for $125.

Jimmy mentioned the BA110/112, and I will concur there as well. If you're looking for a way to get the Ampeg vibe without breaking back or bank, they will do it. I love my 112!

The 112 is cool... I just don't feel it would be loud enough for my use.

All my amps have some character. The Crate BX100 may struggle to keep up with a loud rock band, but its sound is certainly unique and cool. The Hartke HA2000 with a pair of 4x10s is more than loud enough for just about anything, and again has a wonderfully shapeable sound.

And both were cheap, less than $200 each. The Crate new, the Hartke gently used. And I'm getting a used SWR 4004 that also has great sound of its own.
