Cheapest/easiest way to get Taurus sounds?

Well, my brother uses a large aluminum extrusion for his looper strips -- I don't know the exact size at this point but I was going to ask him about it.

I think that you could get away with a smaller enclosure -- the BASYN one looked like it was plenty roomy. I'm used to hitting the pedals on my fx rig which is packed so I'm thinking of prototyping it on paper to see what I think I can get away with.

60 bucks might seem like alot, but it's probably cheaper than you can have a custom enclosure made. It also lets you use regular stomp switches -- I dunno, the baby blue of the BASYN wasn't really my thing.

To go really cheap, you could build a sturdy box of hardwood and then do a panel for the top...

Dunno, but I was order #3 on the website. It's only been up for a few months so not much traffic apparently. I would imagine that the circuit runs on VDC, so it would only be a difference of pwr supply for you.

I have requested a softcopy of the manual so I can choose components, I will try to report back with whatever I can find on the power requirements.

I'm planning to do a diversion from the norm on my design, since I'm not a keyboard player and don't really recognize the notes on the keyboard.

BASYN toimii myös 220V verkossa. Rahti Suomeen on 43 dollaria. Valmistaja kertoi käyttäneensä muuntokerrointa 1,55 hinnoissa. Ainoa vaan, että hänen mielestä 1 dollari on 1,55 euroa. Taitaa olla kuitenkin päinvastoin. Kun maksaa dollareina, on hinta tuon 400 + rahti.

Hey All:

Update: I received confirmation from BASYN regarding my MIDIPeds order -- the unit is in the mail and on the way to me.

Here's a partial shot mockup of the MIDI footpedal I want to build.

Since I'm not a keyboard player, and not a brilliant musician and want to use it mostly for brown notes and drones, I thought that having backlit LEDs with note indicators would make it easier to master.

My bro and I are going to make a few in the next month or so, can't wait.

Keep us updated on what you're going to do for the housing. That's the only thing that's making me hesitate right now...

For the buttons, I think I'm going to go with these, similar to what the Basyn uses:

My only concern is still what I make it out of...you think plywood or MDF would be strong enough?

Actually, those switches are looking like a pretty sweet deal -- Using the others is likely to be pretty pricey.. They are a bit deep looking, but that's no biggie.

Wood would work fine. I mean, you're not going to be jumping up and down on it. 1/2" thick would be really strong, and in that case you probably could jump up and down on it.

Haven't received my PCBs yet, which has me a bit worried. If they aren't here by early next week I'll make an inquiry.

Basyn looks really cool! And compact. But I do love the control you get with pedals.

I have a Taurus I and love it, but it's back in Canada & I'm in the UK. To compensate, I use a PK-5 and a microkorg, or a Moog Rogue (identical architecture to the Moog Taurus II) when only a Moog will do. Killer and relatively affordable.

The Roland PK-5 lets you do incredible things that a Taurus can't - hold notes, note + octave, stunning range...it's an instrument. Well worth the investment and space, and I love using it with the microkorg (a powerful synth in the pedal powered context, esp with software).

Well I ordered the midipeds kit, and I'm going to order the buttons this weekend too.

I figure I can throw it in an MDF enclosure for cheap, maybe with some tasty woodgrain veneer or truck bed liner :D . The guts aren't going to get hurt so I can work on refining the enclosure as I need to. $55 for the kit plus $25 for the buttons, plus $15 for enclosure supplies...not too bad.

That plus an Alesis Micron...should be good!

I just received an email from Basyn -- the kit hadn't shipped yet but it's on the way now. excellent.

Yeah, I hear you about he PK-5, that it has alot of bells and whistles -- which makes comparing it to a simple MIDI pedal a bit of an apples and orange thing -- but of course in order to make use of some of those functions you need a synth capable of them -- and I don't. The Little Phatty doesn't do chords. But it does have a keyboard gate CV so the sustain is built in. And with 2 oscillators I can tune in thirds/fifths/octaves.... Maybe at some point in the future it'll dawn on me why I need it but for now I just want to be able to change a simple progression with my feet.

Jason, let me know how those switches work for you -- I haven't bought any yet -- still waiting for my brother to work out the logic for the LED indicator switching. Turns out that it's not as easy as I thought.

I was looking for something Taurus-esqe myself and the Basyn is tempting, but now that I'm reading about MIDI I'm thinking I'd be able to use the sampling capabilities.

I am admittedly (fairly) clueless about the world of Midi. Take the Roland PK-5A; are there any built in sounds or do you need to run it through a keyboard or a module to get anything out of it?

Gotta admit, I'm pretty new to MIDI as well. The PK-5s are very easy to use, but there are a few things to look out for.

When I first hooked them up to the Microkorg, only the polyphonic setting seemed to work, but all of the really cool functionalities (+ octave, hold, etc) are for the bass setting. The reason is that PK-5 is optimised for Roland's synths, meaning that the bass function default output is midi channel 2. So you have to re-set it to channel 1, or have the sound module configured appropriately. And the PK-5 has a very specific way of altering settings, which is very easy when you get used to it, but you really need to sit down with the manual.

Although I'm enthusiastic about the midi/digi worlds, I'm an analogue goon at heart, so such things take me a while to wrap my head around. But it's well worth the effort. Still, I'll always have a soft spot for my Taurus 1 - how to hit the 'brown note' the easy way!

I was under the assumption that this model is a standalone synth.

Out of curiosity, Is there a synth/midi site out there comparable to talkbass? I tried the all mighty Google and all that really brought up was midi files.
