Cheapest Way to Get Speakers Reconned?

Hey Bass Brothas,

I bought a 410 GK RBH used a couple of years ago, and I've found the speakers to be lacking in some definition recently. I've also had a few unfortunate situations where I've been playing and lost 50-60 percent volume out of nowhere, and gotten a distorted, emaciated tone (great for gigs).

I've been using a 1001 RBH GK head as well. Problems seems to occur in both Full-Range and Bi-Amp mode.

I'm using a standard HOSA speakon...i've read in a couple of previous posts that you've gotta use a 4-conductor speakon to use the GK head's in bi-amp mode, so I'll be looking into finding one of those....

My question is: could the distorted-loss of volume issue be a blown speaker? Or a blown tweeter? The amp? I bought it used so I have no idea of it's history but i imagined it's been through many a gig.

Also, anybody know of any repair guys in LA who could diagnose/fix for a bargain? I've been considering going to Orange County SPeaker Repair but I live in downtown LA so it's a bit of a trek for me...i'd have to get all four speakers reconned or even replaced...

Is replacing speakers a job a complete non-enginee:crying:r-mathematical type guy could do solo?

Never look for the "cheapest" when it comes to speakers. You could have damaged speakers, if one or more fail the others will continue to work. If they fail open the power is reduced, if they fail in a short condition distortion and amp damage can result.
This could also be an amp fault, it can even be as simple as the effects return jack internal contacts having micro corrosion. "Loop" an instrument cable from the effects send jack to effects return jack, if the problem does not happen again then the return jack needs proper cleaning.

As far as the speakon cable look for a 4 pole with 4 conductor speakon cable.

I agree. You want to stay away from "cheap" when you're talking about your speakers. You don't want to sound cheap. Try to get good stuff at a good price. Good sound is not cheap.

There is a difference between replacing a speaker and re-coning a speaker. Re-coning takes the right parts kit and the proper experience, technique, and procedures to refurbish the speaker assembly.

Replacing a speaker in a cabinet is easy. Any bass player could do it. Not so with repairing or re-coning the speaker itself.
