There is nothing anyone can say that can justify buying a rip off, counterfeit bass. Seriously, it's a crime to knowingly buy a counterfeit and I am 100% sure some of these get recycled back into the market as the genuine item.

There are plenty budget options out there that there is no justification for what is truly sketchy behavior.
IMO, there isn't much difference to me between doing this and buying a relic, except people buying relics are paying more. Can I add an LOL without offending anyone :)?

OK, relics aren't illegal, but it's all the same kinda BS to me.

This thread smells a little spammy to me.

I'm not spammy, just new lol!
Made the account for the post, I normally lurk.
Thanks for highlighting how fraudulent the website is, I didn't really click that using the logo like that was illegal *stupid*

My experience has been when you first get something like that, you're often amazed (and rightly so) at "how good it sounds for the money." Sometimes you even do the requisite upgrades and mods to make it "as good as" the real deal selling for much more. And usually you're very happy with it.

Then, a year or two later, little problems start developing with it. Nothing you can't live with - or mostly fix. But it is what it is, and you again remind yourself you didn't pay much for it.

But eventually you get a crack at playing the real thing - or a lower cost version made by the big name's sister label (e.g. Gibson/Epiphone, MM/Sterling/SUB, etc.), and you realize the knockoff you got really doesn't sound or play all that great by comparison.

That's not always the case. There are genuine diamonds in the rough out there. And sometimes it works out well or better than anybody has a right to expect. No surprise since even the big names ship an occasional lemon, so it goes both ways. But bottom line is it's a crapshoot. The only difference is that the odds are materially better in your favor with an instrument from a known label who has a reputation to keep - as opposed to a knockoff builder who can easily fold their tent, change their name, and bounce back once word gets out their stuff isn't all that great.

If you like to tinker and/or gamble a little, knockoffs can be fun. There's a certain satisfaction to be had dropping less than $100 on something, maybe do a little work and upgrading of things on it, and have all your musical friends tell you how great they think it is. But it's still a gamble. So if money is short you're probably better off getting something less expensive but known rather than chancing a complete no-name knockoff and hoping for the best.

I happen to like cheap basses. I find them to be a lot of fun. But until I got myself a few really good basses first, I never bothered with them. Because back then I couldn't afford to spend money on anything that might not pan out or have resale value down the road. Truth is, I was too broke to go dirt cheap.

Something to think about. ;)

Hi,
I was looking to buy a rather pretty Schecter Guitar Research Stiletto Custom-5 Bass.
but unfortunately the company that deals genuine basses does not ship to the uk. However I found on the internet a vastly cheaper replica bass that does.

Does anyone have any experience with this company? Are they as true to original as they claim? Should I just wait and find a genuine Schecter on Ebay?

Genuine Schecter: Schecter Guitar Research Stiletto Custom-5 Bass

Replica Schecter: Link Removed

Thanks in advance!

So one is made in Korea and one is made in China ...

I voted genuine, but I don't believe the chinese copy will fall apart, or even be bad.

My real vote would be if you want a good bass, you can buy a cheap chinese CNC made bass, however don't buy a purpose built rip off, and certainly not of something that is essentially a budget option anyway?
I also voted genuine but the Chinese copy, visually speaking only, seems very similar to the original

I confess!!!
I have a Chibson Les Paul Custom '68 and a Chibanez PS-10, but they are basically just decorations in the studio. Poor electronics, bridge made of soft metal, nut made of soft plastic... Not real "player" instruments, as I received them.

Still, they were cheap enough and look very cool as decorations. I would not spend $1,000s+++ just for that. On the other hand, there are people who DO spend thousands on decorative items...
