Cheapish Combo Recomendations

Right now ive got a peavey 215 being powered by a peavey firebass and a marshall vbc810 being powered by my SVT, the problem is, these both kick ass, but, are seriously not good for bedroom practice! Just a tad on the loud side. Ive been thinking about getting a nice smallish combo for a wee while.

Was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations, i was looking for something 100-200 watts with 2x10 speakers instead of a 1x15. I think a Peavey 210TX combo is probably my best bet (its just the T-Max head attatched to a 210TX (airhead style) cab), problem is they dont pop up too often, so i was wondering, is there anything else along the same kinda lines?

you know those things called volume knobs, against popular opinion they can be used to make your amp queter

With the firebass, this is true, with the SVT, it doesnt do quiet, it goes from almost unaudible to hell-uva loud instantly

I've got a Fender Bassman 150 (112 speaker) which I like, but it sounds like a waste of $430 in your case if all you need it for is quiet practice. The headphone idea is a good one and alot cheaper.

I've never heard of bass amps that won't turn down (though our lead player has an amp that claims has no volume adjustment at all -- it's either OFF or REALLY ON), but I'm admittedly inexperienced, so consider this:

If it's got a direct out, consider a small headphone rig. For example, get a cheap mini-mixer with a headphone amp like Invalid Link Removed. New $89

Then you have a LOT of flexibilty -- run from your direct out into the mixer, connect metronome and/or stereo/mp3 player. Connect effects. Run to a recorder, etc. etc. etc.

You could also go from the out of the mixer to the AUX IN of a boom box or other stereo. Then two or more people could practice together.

The SVT-II is like that tho, there is a huge volume step up.

I couldnt use just the DI out on it either because its a valve head it needs a load, well, i could use the DI out, but, it would be a bit silly having headphones in while having 8x10s barking away

Ill have a look at headphone amps, what i was also considering is just getting a peavey 2x10 cab (or another 2x10 cab, and using that with one of the heads, it'll be alot quieter because it has a fair few less speakers), probably use it to replace the 410 which is going soonish anyways

Buy the Epi 112 airhead over at the Pit, and slap your Firebass in it. Done, and done.

If any of your speaker cabs are wired in series, you could install a second cab input jack. This jack would be wired to just one (or two) of the speakers in your cab.

Leave the original cab wiring connected as is, and you will be able to use your cab with one speaker for practice or with all speakers working for gigs. (depending on which jack you plug into)

I have done this mod to a SWR Goliath II (4x10) and a Marshall 1960 4x12 (guitar cab) with good results.
If your Peavey amp is s/s, you should have no problem with the higher ohm load while driving only one speaker.

I just played thruogh a ampeg 110 combo, it was like the 15" and 12" combos.. i think it was 30 watts, but very loud. it was $150

Ashdown combos are cool and sound great. The electric blue 180 will power a cafe gig and that's a cheap one.
