Double Bass Chennell/Jazzboxukes very, very small EUB kind of thing.

Chennell String Instruments

Jazz Box Ukes

Toby Chennell is building me the smallest EUB in the world. I thought you guys would like to see it. I am also doing it to share a bit of love for Toby. He has been nothing but superb through the whole process. We have backed and forth about all the details and nothing is too much trouble. He has put the whole thing on hold while we work through nitty-gritty details. It will have an Fdeck preamp with extra passive tone control mounted under the fingerboard. Nice and discreet. Toby does lovely things with lovely wood. In the olden days I would have had to put up a warning about this post being picture heavy but this is the 21st Century so here I go.

I can only put 20 pics in so if you want more there are some here I thought I was so over the Bass Uke thang........

I have not actually got my hands on it yet. We are still waiting for the Fdek to be finished. I suspect it will be a mix of upright and horizontal, depending how I feel. The "endpin" socket it made to fit on a cymbal stand and I also envisage some sort of wandering around upright shoulder strap thing. It is all a bit of a suck it and see project.

If he would build one of those with a 41 and 1/2 inch string length I would be interested. Dual Bass bar is a good idea to ensure that the top doesn't sink. I was his site a while ago and I can't remember specifically but I got the feeling that he didn't have much experience building the the longer string length? For some reason I'm thinking when I read it I was concerned about the top sinking? Can't remember why, it's been awhile

I could be completely wrong about everything I just said also. Upon reviewing some of his pictures when thing that struck me was on the e u b the tailpiece goes all the way up to the bridge. On some of his newer pictures it looks like he cut the tailpiece down to give some more after length to the strings. I think that is a very important design modification

Dual bass bars in Toby’s hand in my experience is not at all an impediment to a sinking top. I have an Arco prototype which incurred a severely sunken table when fitted with Spirocore 1/4 size strings. It now sports TWO soundposts, which cured this problem.
