Cherry wood neck?

In that case, I'd be willing to bet (along with Wademeister63) that you'd be fine with an all-cherry neck and a bloodwood fretboard for a 34" 4-string. Again (not to sound like a broken record) you'll want to make sure that the woods are quartersawn and free of knots and other imperfections to really ensure stability.

A flatsawn piece would be plnety fine as well Anthony. A solid piece of wood will not matter what the cut is.

Cherry is known for it's stability and it tools well. The sapwood is also know to be consistant with the 'regular' wood so you can display some cool color variations and still have stable wood.

If I were to try a solid cherry neck I would be very discriminating in selecting a very straight grain with little to no runout. That can be difficult to find but not impossible, which is probably why it is not really know as a neck wood.

I've seen it in the center of an Alembic 'hippy sandwich".

I am now building a set of guitars that have 1/4" purpleheart/cherry/purpleheart sandwich in the center of mahogany on one, and in the middle of maple on the other two.

would bloodwood be stiff enough for a fretboard? what about combining cherry with other wood in the neck like adding bloodwood strips up the back would that help strenghen it?

Warmoth offers an all bloodwood neck if you want it. They rate it as close to maple, but not quite. Check their web site for details on the wood.
