Chi-Sonic Pickup Demo!!!

The Darkstars, they are warmer to my ear.

In the one clip they have with the DarkStars, I thought they sounded brighter than the Chi-Sonics. The DarkStars are also wider than the J sized Chi's. That will make them fuller sounding.

I'm curious to hear the humbucker Chi's.

Also al the clips with round wounds were using stainless steel strings.

I think the Chi's sound pretty good. Neo magnets have a certain tone, and you can hear it in the Chi's. My neo pickups sound very similar.

I far prefer the Chisonics, but I likethe warm, modern tone with a bit of grit that will cut through a mix. The Dark Stars seem more vintage like that would blend with mix better.

It all depends on what sound you are looking for. Both have a place.

I suspect that's true. The other, major diff is that the DS neck pickup is much farther up the neck than a J neck pickup. That will produce a very different sound - more stringy - less bark.

In this config, I find the bridge pup comparo interesting. The DS can't acheive that classic jazz bridge burp, while the CS does it well. On the other hand, judging on how the DS picks up the fret noise, it is a bit more "open" and articulate, you can almost hear the indivudal string windings ( round) on the frets.

onto the neck....

pup placement on the two basses is too different.
bad comparo.

What magnetic is used in the DS?

I like the Alnico5 mags in my J pups. AERO. Honestly sounds somewhere between the two.

I like the CS pups for sure. Did not dig the oem pups with the Sky JO5, so if they could fit Chi's in that model for a slight upcharge, its a no brainer. I used AEROS and am much happier then the Sky oem, which were vintagey, but in a muddy way. ( you can check the clips to confirm)

5 STRING CHI-SONICS!?

I'll like to be the first to order over the counter pups when the humbucker comes out in 5 str. Have a 5 string bass specifically purchased here two years ago for a DS conversion.( I DO like the DS sound, and I NEED burp reduction in this lightweight bass) The benefit of a larger company rolling out pups, is that Dan and Co. have the financial/operational horsepower to develop the line out, including 5 string versions. I'd bet $1 that the old MTD bass with have a Chi-Sonic in it before there is a 5 str DS. Although I'd order a 5'er from Fred today, if I could.

And there's that one off P5 that I'd like to have made, ebony board/mandolin frets. Their Jauqo III-X series. You know, the custom built to your kharma's request right in the heart of Bear's country line? Yeayh. Dark wood/deep color, brite as hell P5. Yessir! :bassist:

i.e., hope to hear a 5 string "chi-Sonic P pup soon!

The " New" Lakland P pup on this Dunn sounds VERY VERY good!
