Chicago documentary

Slightly off topic.. Sorry OP..... If you are a lover of Chicago’s music, look up Leonid and Freinds on YouTube. These guys strive to perfectly recreate all of Chicago’s music. I dare say I find them every bit as listenable (if not more) than the original! Leonid by the way is The bass player and is superb.... Anyway, just throwing it out there for any old Chicago lovers like me.

Abercrombie...:)
I watched some more of these guys. I think Leonid is on keys. The bassist is Dimitri...
Their secret weapon, IMO, is the guitarist. He has Kath down.

Saw this on Netflix last week. Pretty decent presentation. Honestly I was fine with it weighing heavily on the Kath years. Top of the line guitarist, soulful singer and top notch bandleader. To paraphrase Lamb "Chicago isn't really Chicago with out Terry."

I know I stopped paying attention to new stuff after the "Mean Streets" joke. And I really hate how they shifted towards the Cetera power ballad as the norm. It's so hard for me to believe how much they changed after Kath died. I-X? Can't get enough. XI? meh. Anything later I can't get away from fast enough.

I can't even listen to my Pandora "Chicago" station because they feature so much newer stuff.

For my money, Chicago did 8 really great studio albums.
  • CTA
  • Chicago II
  • Chicago III
  • Chicago V
  • Chicago VI
  • Chicago VII
  • Chicago VIII
  • Chicago X
Chicago XI just didn't do it on the same level as the others, and it was their last album with Terry Kath. After that, they had great moments, but never a great album from start to finish like CTA, Chicago II or Chicago V. X is surprisingly good, even though it has their first syrupy ballad with Cetera on lead vocals, which was also their first #1 hit single. (if you leave me now)

Don't get me wrong; Chicago was always a great band, and I would probably go see them as long as Robert Lamm is still around, but that band of the 70s was one of the truly innovative and original bands of all time. I watched the doc up until about the Hot Streets era, and then lost interest. Terry Kath was one of the most gifted musicians I can think of, and it's a shame he was such a drug addled idiot leading up to his unfortunate and untimely death.

Love there old stuff and appreciate the new stuff too. I don't mind a good power ballad so don't fault them for that either. Heck Journey, REO Speed Wagon and Chicago crushed the 80's with them and they are all filled with excellent musicians. I'm fine with that, personally.
