Chopsticks

It is next to impossible to get real Ramen in my area, but you can get plenty of fake stuff for really crazy prices.
It is so bad that when there was a poll about the best Japanese restaurant in the city, 30% of the responses were Chinese restaurants, & 10% were Thai or Vietnamese.

I use them for various tasks that are not always food,
such as gummy vitamins.

The daggone things get stuck in the bottom of the jar!

I was having lunch at a Chinese buffet recently & was back to back with one of the staff who was having lunch, too.

The customers facing us spoke up & asked how I learned to eat with chopsticks so well, as they had observed I was doing just as well as the Chinese staff person sitting behind me.

I told them the secret was decades of experience & to keep the bowl/plate under the sticks.
To be honest, I had not thought about it in decades, it just came to me sort of like typing on a QWERTY came to me, without training.

Oh, I was slow as anyone to begin with, but just picked it up, I guess I am a good mimic.
I do consider it a tiny bit of personal pride to eat for an hour at a buffet & never open the spoon & fork kit they give you.

I may start carrying my own to the buffet, I am going once/week lately.

My teak sticks are heavier than the steel ones. It is a very hard wood & does not seem to need treatment or paint to last a lifetime.

Some are just too slippery!

The only ones I have any trouble at all with are at the thin metals ones at Korean restaurants. They're thin and slippery. They look cool, but I end up asking for disposable wooden ones.

That's a good video. The Japanese woman is right on the money about one's chopstick etiquette being watched and evaluated over there. One of the best "compliments" I've ever received was when I was out with a group of Japanese friends, and overheard a young woman who was new to the group remark with some amazement to one of our "regulars" that I used my chopsticks particularly well. The regular just glanced over at me, then back to the yong woman and shrugged, saying something to effect of, "Yep, that's just him."

Some might not think being taken for granted would be a nicety, but to have reached that level of acceptance in a group like that was gold!

I feel similarly about anyone who eats curry & rice with just a fork.
