Yep, when I was in Okinawa in the middle 70s, chopsticks provided with a restaurant meal were the break apart type made from bamboo, and you needed to scrape them together a little to knock off any random fibers left from the manufacturing cuts. While I didn't eat off base that often, being left handed I would look for locals using chopsticks left handed, and I never saw any.
My dad would shake his head over diamond encrusted eating utensils.
I think that's just mother-of-pearl and glitter, so hopefully he wouldn't hurt himself too badly...

The nicest set I was ever given inside a restaurant.
The restaurant itself is a rip-off however, the "tempura shrimp" is just something they reheated from a box.
