Neither. Memorize songs, or at least the progressions/ changes.

Nothing worse that goin to see a live band with the stage littered with music stands.

How can you entertain the crowd when you are reading a sheet?

Weekend warrior bar bands are different than theater, big band, concert band, symphony .........
Learning standard notation helps to develop skills used in small groups.

In my case it depends from the gig scenario, if jazz, usually they provide just chords/melody sheets as real books, others genre give you chords or just the bass lines
