Chris Larkin Bass - Electronic

Hi All!...
Please Help!!!
I have an older Chris Larkin 4 str. Reacther bass, that is in need of new pots..
Anyone out there who has a wiring diagram and specs of the potentiometers?
The pot specs is most important, so if noone has a diagram, maybe someone will do me the greatest favour and open their bass and look inside and give me the specs..?.

I See now that I posted that it's a 4 string, but it's actually a 5 string.. ha ha sorry!... I Think the serial says. 880402

Hi Danny,

So your bass was started as the second instrument in April 1988... ;-)
To be honest I haven't seen a preamp like yours before, but I'm pretty sure it's original. Chris once told me he used to build the preamps himself in the early days and this looks like one of these.

What I see from your pic:
Volume (top left) has a push-pull switch function - so I assume it activates the preamp. This one is most certain 250k resistor and log track taper - I can check at home
Blend (top middle) is a stacked pot - two pots build as one. So it actually doesn't really "blend", it's two volumes crosswired, so at one end bridge is full on and neck off, at the othjer end it's neck full on and bridge off and in the middle it both at half volume - I'll have to check at home about resistor and track taper but I think this one has to be linear.
Tone (top right) is a regular pot 250k resistor and log track taper. It reads 220k and LOG on it.
Bass, Middle and Treble - the three ones at the bottom are probably 10k resistor and linear track taper - I'll check with my stuff.

From 1991 on well into the 2000s Chris used the Citronic preamp, that was made to his specs. In the time between your preamp and the Citronic preamp he used Shadow preamps. I have both of these preamps and I'll check what pots are used with these.

Are all pots noisy, or just some of them?

I'd be very interested to see more of your bass, so it would be very nice, if you could post some more pics.

It's quite an impressive collection you got - wow - nice!.. I'm speechless!...
It's actually the specs of the Bas/Middle/Treble midstop pots Im mostly puzzled about, cos, one has no middle stop, two has middle stop, but they are all 470kohm and if that's original then I have a problem, I can't seem to find that size midstop pots anywhere.. but if they, and I'm sure you are right in saying they are suppose to be 10kohm and if so, then it's no problem to find them!..
But yes! All the pots are showing a little to a lot of wear now, so I might as well change all of them ...

Hi Danny,

Wow, that one's a beauty. I like the slightly different shape compared to the later ones (22 frets instead of 24), the some kind of more edgy design of the early Reacters. I've only ever seen one like this on ebay late in 2009. I saved the images then.

I've taken a look at my preamps yesterday evening and here's what I found out.

Volume and Tone pots are 250k (220k) with log track taper.
The Blend pot is a stacked 250k with log track taper, too. Sorry I was wrong about it in my earlier reply.
Bass, Middle and Treble are all 10k with linear track taper, which makes perfectly sense, as you start in the middle and with a log track taper it would be about 80% on one side and 20% on the other. So you would get for example much more boost than cut.
In my opinion a different resistor for these pots should only change the efficiency of boost and cut, but I'm not dead sure about that... ;-)

I removed all the preamps from my basses (not from the Blen) and put them in stompbox cases, so I use the same preamp for every bass I plug in. Right now I have three of those with different preamps / different frequencies in them.

So that's the one with the Shadow preamp - removed from 1990 Reacter

So there was a motherboard with all the pots and switching on it apart from the blend control, which was later replaced with a rotary switch, and two daughterboard, as Chris used to call them. One was titled Standard Unit (600 hours of battery life and some noise) and the other one was called Low Noise Unit (150 hours of battery and low noise - by 1990ies standard). Citronic made these for Chris exlusively. The early daughterboards hat boost/cut frequencies at 60Hz, 300Hz and 2kHz, the later ones had frequencies changes to 60Hz, 600Hz and 4kHz. The writings on the boards never changed, but you can distinguish them from some parts.

And finally that's the one I've seen on ebay years ago.

So, if you ever think about letting her go, her younger siblings would be delighter to welcome her... ;-)

There might be some more information in Chris's stuff, but sadly he passed away early in August and therefore we can't ask him anymore.

I hope this helps and please let me know if I can do more help.

And now the final part:
A friend (he also owns a couple of Larkin guitars) and myself are working on a Chris Larkin owner / instrument database, that in the future should fill a website and maybe a book and therefore we are trying to collect as much information as possible.
So I'd like to ask if you'd join in, send us a couple of pictures, videos, soundfiles and whatever you have and know about your Larkin instrument. How you got it, any stories, whatsoever.
This is a non-profit thing and if there will be any money in the future it is to be donated into cancer research.

Wow Brother, you have gone all in, and I love it :-) ... Its a fantastic idea to have you preamps in a stomp box, I have done a lot of simular things over the years, just nice having the possibility to use a fine preamp or boost on all your instruments instead of just the one it came in.... We think alike you and I HAHAHA...

Sounds like a fantastic idea making a Larkin site, I found one simular for RIckenbacker some years ago, and it was a blessing having a place to go, when a fine instrument is in need of care and the manufaturere or builder is no longer around.. I got the sad message of Chris Larkings death when I wrote him to ask for the help you have now provided.. god rest his soul...

Brother - Thank you so sincerely much for helping me out, and dont worry - YOU'll be the absolutely first to know if I decide to part with the ol' gal', I promise you that :-)

I have purchased all the pots and have connected them wire by wire, but I have no sound on the active side...
I have expect that I have the push/pull switch wrong connected.... By any chance - do you know which wire goes where on the push/pull switch??

Hi Danny,

Sorry for my late reply, but I wasn't online here for the last few weeks.

Ok, here's how I think it should work. You push/pull switch is technically two switches built in one housing. Each set of three pins is a switch, switching the center pin to either the top or the bottom pin. I suppose your preamp is located between blend and volume.

Connect the wire from the blend to one of the center pins. connect the wire from your volume to the bottom pin of the side you connected the blend to and the center pin of the other side of the switch. Then connect the preamp input wire to the top pin of the side you connected the blend to and the preamp output wire to the other top pin. the sixth pin - bottom side - is left blank.

So your switch connects either the blend directly to the volume - no preamp, only the left side of the switch is used - or it connects the blend to preamp input and volume to preamp output. I've drawn a very basic schematic that should help... ;-)

So you should have active on one side and passive on the other side. If it's upside down, you just have to wire the switches upside down. Please be sure the preamp is connected to the battery. To test it you can temporarily wire the battery directly to the preamp.
