Double Bass Chris Minh Doky

Any Chris Minh Doky fans? Seriously I never hear anything said of him on here but I discovered him from Youtube, what a bass player! What really stands out to me is his intonation, and dexterity, as well as his melodic sense... He is a proponent for the Yamaha Silent Basses (SLB-200), which do sound pretty good... but you can find several videos on Youtube of him playing acoustic. Not to mention he can hold his own on BG too. Anybody else listen to him?

a few years ago i saw him w/ mike stern and he completely blew me away. i mean you pretty much nailed it in your description. i found his solo's to be so clear and musical, and his command over the instrument is impressive to say the least. i was a little bummed when i saw him to see the silent bass (nothing against eub's, i'd just always prefer the real deal) but he could have fooled anybody. his tone was huge. i must say though, since then, i havent heard much if anything about him. any recomendations on recordings for me to check out???

That's cool, I'd love to see him live...
Honestly most of what I've listened to of him is live vids I stumbled onto on Youtube. Just search his name on there and you can find some nice ones of him in a jazz trio, playing My Funny Valentine, Autumn Leaves, and some originals..Some really good solos... And there's lots of other vids from other performances, some okay quality ones.
As far as studio recordings, his album Scenes from a Dream sounds pretty good... One song that I really like from that is called Rain. I want to check out more of his recordings tho.

Nice vid. I guess his brother did some recording with him, at least on his earlier material. Also according to Wikipedia (if it can be trusted), Chris lives in Copenhagen and NYC... I read elsewhere that when he first moved to the States he lived in NYC but like you said maybe he doesn't reside there currently and only visits over here occasionally... I know I saw a vid of him at NAMM so maybe he just does special events Stateside

i work in a studio in new york where he comes in at least once every 3-4 weeks. very nice dude. sounds totally american to me. his tone and pocket totally blows me away. would ask him for a lesson but dont wanna come off fan-ish. anyone know if he teaches privately somewhere?:help:

I really dig hm on Trilok Gurtu's Bad Habits Die Hard live album. Great performance of really cool Indian/jazz fusion. Trilok on percussion of course with Bill Evans on sax, Mark Feldman on violin, David Gilmore on guitar(no not THAT DG), Andy Emler on keys. Cover pic shows Chris with an electric bass but I'm sure there's EUB or upright on some of the tunes. A great album to hear his work.
