Squire's big early influences include old Motown (one of the Syn's big live numbers was Heatwave) and of course, John Entwistle. He can be very aggressive in his playing style. I think that a key to his creativity is to not get cornered into being the bass player. He's just as likely to be playing the lead line or do some chording in a song as he is playing a standard bass line. He's always said that he looks for different ways to do things rather than the old standard (which he can still do very nicely in songs like Owner of a Lonely Heart).
Something to note, and in fitting with Yes' style, is that Squire rarely wrote complete songs, but rather wrote some really interesting bass riffs that got incorporated into songs. That said, given the chance, he is capable of some excellent songwriting (check out Fish Out of Water).
