Christian Bale = Douchebag #1

Meh, whatever. I didn't hear what brought him to this point so I can't comment on how big of a douchebag his is. He might not even be a douchebag. Maybe the other guy is the actual douche.

Really, who cares as long as he keeps putting out decent movies. He just needs to entertain me. I really don't care what he does in his personal life.

why was the guy walking on the set...maybe he is an idiot...maybe the scene was an excellent take and took a long time to get, or involved a lot of complex stunts

i don't agree with treating people like that..but if i was in the middle of recording my best basline ever and some assistant engineer intern comes in and unplugs something or deactivates my channel...i have to say i would certainly have some choice words for them.

a movie set is usually handled w/ the same level of awareness as a nuclear test site, and it does beg the question as to why anyone would purposely walk into the middle of a shot.

IME, good actors are some pretty intense people in general. and frankly, its the actors that arent like this that are considered the weirdos. willing to bet the scene was freakin' intense, and bale's "method" spilled back into reality and all over that poor DP.

still, away from the set, if you're a dbag, you're a dbag, and comeuppance is a bitch.

The way I look at it is, there's really no excuse to treat someone like crap. Yeah it may happen, but that's doesn't make it right. You treat people as you expect them to treat you. Treat others like dirt and you deserve what's coming back your way.
The guy's an actor so what? If I went off like that on someone at work, then I'd be sent a-packin. If I went off like that on someone here just because they irked me, I'd be banned. So..because he's an actor on set he gets latitude? Sorry, I'm not buying it. There are other ways to get your point across.
He may be a great actor, he may even be a likable guy when he's not being a moron, but the impression that I get is that he's just a douche until proven otherwise.

the difference, of course, is that your participation here is voluntary, and not your profession. you are also not getting interferance on your ability to perform your job by folks who are supposedly employed to assist you/assist the folks who are trying to help you do the best job you can.

if someone inadvertantly screws up your work with their boneheadedness, and they are not your employer, you're going to be irate. i know i have in the past.

as for him being a "douche", well, i would hesitate to make such a pronouncement. you've never met him. neither have i. we don't know the particulars of the situation. all we know is that he's passionate about his work, and not very indulgent toward boneheads.

+1 to JT.

Let's say (hypothetical of course) you guys were recording a bass track and digital editing did not exist yet. On you're 5th take you nail the bass line. It couldn't get any better than that last take, and probably wont. The only problem is nobody will ever hear it because someone didn't do their job and the take didn't get recorded or got screw up somehow. At the least I think just about everyone here would have to admit to being a tad irate.

I'm not saying how he acted was called for, but not everyone reacts the same way to certain situations. To me, it sounded like he was put in that situation by someone else. Did he deserve it is the question nobody here can answer.

All I can say is that, if I'm at work, I'm expected to act as a professional and not like a spoiled toddler - even if someone ticks me off and I'm totally in the right, going off like that would not be tolerated nor would I tolerate it from someone else. There are always better avenues to take rather than sitting there mouthing off like a damned fool. The ability to step back and say "I'm pissed but I'm going to solve this problem" vs "I'm pissed and I'm going to shout and throw a tantrum like a 3 year old denied a toy" is the difference between douche and non-douche.

maybe im crazy but when i clicked the youtube link it wasnt edited or bleeped. Anyways, its gone now.

and i'm sure that every minute of your day, every day of your week, 24-7, you've been careful with your words.

i know i have :) ;). i -never- overreact, spazz, curse, pitch a fit or in any other way express my anger and frustration in a manner unbefitting a gentleman.

of course, we don't have cameras and recording devices going around us every waking moment from long before the sun rises until long after the sun sets, every day, to catch all our golden gems. :D.

i guess all i am saying is a) we don't know the whole story and b) we do not have experience in this kind of environment, sufficient for us to accurately judge the legitimacy of this event. for all we know this tirade ended with everyone laughing. or bale might have apologized. or this lighting director's misstep could have cost a day's worth of shooting, or ruined a good take.

I think my favourite line must be:

DP: I was looking at the light

CB: Oh, good for you. How was it? Because it's ******* useless now.

In all honesty though, this happened way back in July. To be fair, Bale did say something like "If you do this again, I'm walking off set." Which seems like fair warning (I've heard worse). Seeing as they are into post production, the message must have got through.

Meh, I could see why he would be so angry. Some people can have pretty bad tempers sometimes, doesn't neccersarily make them a douche though.

What would be more annoying, having a dude ruin a scene by walking around and distracting the actors, or having the actor go on a four minute rampage holding things up even further?

And to think he's calling the guy who he's pissed at unprofessional.

Yes, I am careful in my choice of words 24/7. Sure I get pissed at times just like everyone else and I'm the farthest from perfection that one can get, but I don't nor have I ever gone overboard like that. In work, going off like that would potentially leave me jobless, at home I have 3 kids to set an example for and refuse to go on a 4 min tirade of f-bombs just to show the world that I'm sooooo angry.
At band practice, going off like that on a band mate would in the end, cause far more problems then it would solve, so, no I don't do that.
If I'm pissed, I solve the problem without a childish tantrum. If it's unsolvable for whatever reason, I move on. What this guy did was exactly the "grown up" version of a kid throwing themselves on the floor in a store screaming, because they can't get their way/get a toy.

I do agree that we don't know the back story, for all we know this could be a publicity stunt....
All I can offer is my impression of this guy based on what I've read and heard - his mom and sis have had a problem with him, and now there's this spoiled brat tirade? He may be a fabulous and amazing actor, quite talented and destined for greatness, but a douche to me until proven otherwise.

What do you make of the impressions given by one of his assistants a few posts ago? That's a first-hand account of Bale's personality by someone that has actually worked with him and been around him for a long period of time. Are we going to completely ignore that in favor of two instances that made the news that we don't know the full details behind?

That's simply what's called "damage control". Nearly any celebrity who does something stupid will always have someone come out in their defense, that's just the way it works.
All I can say is that time will tell. If this guy turns out to actually be a great guy, then I'll be fully willing to humbly admit "I was wrong" until then, my hunch is that I'm not. Just my own personal opinion, others are welcome to disagree :)
