Christian bassist's and finding time to practice.

im a christian, yet i have all the time in the world to practice, i don't to go to bible studies and meetings though, i go once on sunday then to youth group and i clean on thursdays, but thats about it, i just started playing bass at my church so i get to do two things at once:) and my pastor got it arranged that i get out of skool early to pratice :) :) :)

i sincerely think that the Lord is blessing my music career because i do practice alot when i was a junkie i had no problem runin hard for bad things now i take that energy and use it to glorify God HE HAS completly set me free for 17yrs from the guttermost to the uttermost and i owe Him nothin but my best

hmm, ok im gonna say this at the begining so no one wanders why, im a pagan, so please be patient with my questions.

does your god need you to be doing all these activities, surely some time to yourself in a place where you feel comfortable and at peace is all you need? ive never been into big buildings for religous purposes, a quiet wood or hillside is all i need, what im trying to say is, in the long run, buildings groups etc etc just arent that important, in the end its you and your god, and if you didnt have all the extra stuff then you got all the time you need for bass

Good points, Arc! God wants us to have peace while we're here on earth. Jesus often took time alone to rest and be alone with God. That's what he was doing the night he was taken by Roman soldiers and consequently executed. The problem that even as Christians, or maybe especially because we are, we feel a real need to reach out and spread the word, and that takes work. Add to that that we're like anyone else, Christian or not, we tend to constantly take on things to keep us (over) busy. It is a real problem.

I think you view things pretty clearly; I hope you'll look into Christianity, REAL Christianity, a little more.

hmm, i study history a lot and mythology and celtic folk tales a lot, and generaly im a cynic, so i dont really see the need for a middle man, s'like the particular God im praying too, he/she knows what im saying. Any way enough of religion, we can both respect each others, what sort of style do you play? i dont really play yet myself, but Rodger from less than jake is a big influence

I think some of you guys are missing the point.
In the first place, the topic is Christian, FOR Christians and ABOUT Christian Bassists. If you're NOT one and don't want to be, why are you here? Maybe you're interested and don't even want to admit it to yourself. If that's the case, welcome!
But, I'm certainly not gonna crash some Muslim Basists' board and tell them what a jerk Bin Laden is! (Even though most of them would probably agree.)

That being said, let me get to my point. The prayer Jesus taught said "Our Father" , not "MY Father". And Paul said not to forget the "gathering of yourselves together." There's plenty of evidence in the New Testament that Christianity is a group religion and that worship is a communal experience.

I think it was a rabbi that told the story about a bunch of people who died and went to ...... (someplace) ..... where they all sat around a table full of sumptous food with spoons as long as the neck of your bass. (My embellishment) They tried to eat but they couldn't get the food to their mouths due to the length of the handle (OK, for some reason they couldn't grasp the handle closer to the food - just go with the story, all right??) Because of this problem the place ended up being Hell for them.
Another group died and went to the same place, but learned to co-operate and feed each other. They served their God by serving each other. Obviously this was Heaven for them.

I believe, with most Christians, that God created the human race and gave them free will, to find people who chose to glorify Him. I play bass in Church to worship and serve my God. I'm using my "gift" (such as it is) to build up the "Body" (the Church) not to gratify myself. It's something I do because I love Him and His people. Yes, sometimes I have to take stock of my motives, but if I stay home and practice, I'm missing the boat. My motive for practicing, is to do my best to serve Him as a part of my small role in the Church. If I dig the groove, that's cool, too.:cool:

Well I'll just throw in a practical point.... I just finished typing in the powerpoint of four praise songs I'm leading this week. I suppose it took about an hour because I'm still learning PP. That hour is going to come out of something, I guess part of the time budget I have for music projects. Now of course any bandleader is going to have his/her time sucked up doing things that are not "practicing".

I think that the non-Christians (again for lack of a better term) raise a valid point, like what's the big deal, set your priorities however you like, and if you're not practicing as much as you like then adjust your priorities. OTOH, being a Christ follower changes your overall priorities enough that the question becomes interesting again. Where *does* practicing fit it? And
we've seen a range of answers from both sides. Interesting.

yeah, sometimes I feel totally swamped.
just finished up nailing down 4 songs for a Christmas CD thats being recorded in a couple of hours for a church my wife directs music at.
then I got to get some sleep so I can go to work at 8pm tonight. get home at 6am and practice "O come all ye faithfull", which I don't quite know yet.
then get some sleep and get up and meet a couple of guitar players at 4pm for a possable band:)
then play for 6pm and 7:30pm worship, and hope no wacky songs I dont know get thrown at me.
if I didn't have to go to work it wouldn't be bad:D
but, its not bad cause I'm using my time to honor God, and help lead people in worship.
