Christian bassist's. Need some advice.

I feel ya about playing the same note all the way through. My favorite song we're doing this week is Let God Arise in G. That's such a driving song its fun. I don't care that I basicly play G through the whole thing. The drummer I'm playing with has spent the last 6 months recovering from a stroke but if he's anything like he used to be, he'll drive it like he needs to. My favorite song that we do is the Revelation Song. Same 4 chordsi in the same progression through the whole thing. At least I get to use a low C in that. But man what a powerful song.

Tycobb, I really glad to hear that your drummer is recovering and I hope his recovery is 100%. My father had a stroke about 7 years ago but due to his attitude he's about 98% on top of his game. Hope your friend does good and prayers are sent.

Playing the same note....YEAH!!! We did a song a while ago called "Leave A Light On For Me" where I played a low D for the greater majority of the song. Very simple...D...DD...D...DD...and I loved it! So simple but very effective. I think that's why I love and admire players like McCartney so much. The right note at the right time with the right feel. I could could be that lucky all the time I'd have it made!

From a fellow Christian brother perspective, I'd say pray about it!

No prayer request is to big or small for God. I'm sure God will want both parties to learn from this experience and grow and to also lead His people into worship more effectively.

I've dealt with this kind of situation before. Two main drummers in our youth group (who play for Sunday worship) are into metal/metalcore/hardcore type of stuff. I guess its a blessing that they understand to not overplay all the time. And through constant encouragement, talks with them, and just playing together more, they learn how to put their 'busy drumming' off to the side for worship music.

On that same note, it's great to have musicians from all different genre backgrounds; we compromise with them and we let them have their own little liberties with the songs. For verses and choruses etc they do simple beats but for bridges and more 'higher energy praise songs' they incorporate their doublebass pedals and china symbols.

Last thing, as musicians, we're constantly learning and growing. Like adolescents, we sometimes have different 'phases'. I'm now into my funk/gospel/jazz phase right now :D
Anyway, just give them time for them to mature as musicians. Maybe they're just stuck on this 'stage' of their musicianship right now.

Blessings

+1 on praying about it and also

+1 on not leaving the church - you gotta get planted in the local church to grow - find out where God's called you to be a stick with it, otherwise you'll get stuck on the same issues at each church you visit.
