Christian Rock bands - recommendations

Not a rock band, but if you're looking for great songwriting, great musicians, etc., I encourage you to look up Over the Rhine. They've been one of my favorite bands for probably 15 years. I can't say enough good things about them.

I heard their guitarists left because the lead singer was pretty much an atheist and wanted nothing to do with Christianity. Not trying to call you out, I just want to make sure I have my story straight.

Demon Hunter is great for metal. Phil Wickham has some good, mellow stuff (very bass heavy!) if you want easier listening. From what I hear, Anberlin is in that "band of Christians" category and I've found some of their stuff rather catchy.


On the goat guy's comment, I would like to know why you posted it too lol. I'd assume where someone is spiritually would be between them and God...it's not really our place to assume whether or not they are a Christian based on the genre of music they play. Obviously if it's sacrilegious or contrary to Christian morals, that would be different....what are these guys guilty of? Using too many minor chords and distortion?

7eventh time down, House of Heros, Kutless, (my band 39Stripes, we have a national release called "Beyond Broken") just had to plug it, sorry. lol

WAAAAAAYYYY back in 1982 (? I think it was) we were doing a show on a Saturday night and our road manager told us about this group - they were appearing in Chicago so we checked them out - killer!!!

I remember they had as much energy as we did - I *sort of* found that troubling......:D

I also recall running into a bunch from Grants Pass, Oregon I THINK they were called "Servant".....pretty unique!

Saw a lot of good ones listed here but don't think I saw Jeremy Camp listed yet. His stuff has a wide range from good hard rock to some good ballads.

Also don't think I saw Audio Adrenaline, a band that probably really a lot of today's bands pay homage to and really started the better Christian Rock.

Another good one would be Lifehouse and was Falling Up mentioned?

How could I forget Audio A? We opened for them a few times in the 90's

There are great older bands that ROCK.

The Prayer Chain. This is a fantastic rock band. Period.

Audio Adrenaline. Check out the album "Bloom" for example.

Mortal. Early/mid 90's Industrial. Remember "Industrial"? Amazing riffs and hooks.

The Choir. Steve Hindalong on drums and vocals before City on the Hill. Alternative for everyone else.

More recent stuff worth listening to: David Crowder Band.

Worship on steroids that is just over the top amazing? Rick Pino.

Grammatrain, first two albums from the 90's are absolute must haves. Granted the lead singer/guitarist is an atheist now, ahem..

Personally I find the "Christian music" genre to be a little sketchy in general, seems like labeling oneself as a band not only (ostensibly) composed of Christians but with a "Christian" message opens up opportunities for human failure to enter into the mix. I remember hearing the drama surrounding Amy Grants divorce, Michael W. Smiths coke fueled songwriting sessions, Jennifer Knapp's outing as a lesbian, and of course Grammatrain's guy renouncing Christianity...

Anyways.. Check out MuteMath, with former members of "Christian" band Earthsuit. They're awesome. Great bassist too.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, got a lot of stuff to check out. What I'm looking for is hard rock stuff....I really like flyleaf type stuff too...love chick singers so anything else in that vein would be appreciated.

Also you guys should check out a local Baltimore band, Ashes Remain, if you've never heard of them. Saw them leading off for Halestorm a couple months ago and they killed....did a 13 minute version of Voodo Child that was killer.

Regional band suggestions are appreciated a lot.

Also if you can find anything by America Gammorah or a band called Gretchen check them out too. Both great bands but never had enough success to get past a couple of cds
