Not to upset anybody, but I came accross this article about poisonous chromium six. This may be used in the string industry in countries where strict regulations don't apply. Did you actually read the article? Here is the 2nd sentence of the 2nd paragraph;

The hazard is for ingestion. Do you put BG strings in your mouth? Do you lick your fingers often enough while playing to ingest 1/10th of a harmful dose?

You are right, I didn't read every word of it. I probably skipped it and went to "No EPA. no protection".

Apart from this, here in Europe it is reported that frequent contact with the skin may result in allergic reactions and rash.

And: No, I don't lick or eat strings... ...yet.

Are you referring to the allergic reaction some people get from strings? Typically that's just a nickel allergy and not hazardous chromium.

Also, I do lick my strings when I try to look cool by playing with my tongue. I should probably stop.

No, not the old nickel allergy. It is reported that hexavalent chromium can cause similar skin problems. Once the skin starts to show irritation, it'll happen more frequently and severely. It is questionable, however, if, in the case of hex-chromium on strings, there will be enough contact to cause any problems. In industry skin protection has to be provided by the employer.
