Chuck Dukowski

From Black Flag. How can you NOT respect this guy? Great player, great song writer, cool guy. I know there are a lot of Black Flag fans out there.. so show yourselves!

On another note, does anyone know what amp equipment Chuck used? The most I've seen is a Marshall Super Bass head and an Ampeg 8x10 cab with his P bass.. I don't know what he used to record Damaged with though.

Chuck started with an Ibanez flying V bass when they were
still "Panic", then moved to and stayed with Fender P's-
I saw a picture from the Keith Morris era where he had an
Acoustic 140/2-15" set-up, then later to an Acoustic
6-10" guitar cab (which would of had to have other speakers
than stock, IMO), with some kind of pre-power set-up,
using QSC or Crown amps with an ADA pre-amp sometimes,
in other pictures I can't make out what make & model.
Both him and Greg Ginn always went solid state.

He's always been a huge influence to me, he always played
with such raw emotion it was tangeble through the stereo,
even better live:

Thanks man. How do you suppose he got the distorted sound on Damaged? Overdriving the preamp and a lot of compression? He's had a huge influence on me, too, I definitely agree about the raw emotion thing.

Hey guys!!! I actually just interviewed Chuck the other day, and he gave me a list of all the gear he's used!

I'm planning to reissue WURM stuff soon.
In early WURM I used a number of amps,
Acoustic 150, GMT 250, Marshall 100 guitar.
On Nervous Breakdown I played the GMT 250 into a 4x 15" cab
On Jealous Again I played into a classic SVT into an Ampeg 2x15 folded horn cab
On Six pack I played a GMT 150B into the Ampeg folded horn and an AE front loaded 2x15 cab
On Damaged I played the GMT 150B into an acoustic 6x12 cab. This is the setup I was happiest with in BF.
On the WURM I'm Dead Ep, Black Flag TV Party single, Black Flag 83 Demos and WURM's FEAST album I played a roland rack mount rig into the acoustic 6x12 cab.
On the SWA Your Future album I played a RAT sound op amp built into a Yamaha 3rd octave EQ into an Ampeg 4x12" speaker cab.
On SWAs Sex Dr, 93, Winter and Volume I played a yamaha PB1 preamp with a dbx 160 and the yamaha 3rd octave in the efx loop bi amped into a 2x18" front loaded cab and the 4x12" cab.
In the CD6 I play an alembic preamp into the dbx160 into the 4x12 ampeg cab and add the 18s if I need them.

Nice!

There really should be more Dukowski appreciation around here. One of my early heroes. Saw him live with Flag back int he early 80s and the man can seriously play (ditto Kira who came along after.)
+1, saw him on the Damaged tour and he was great--as was the rest of the band.

Cool, thanks! Maybe I'm just dense and not recognizing the abbreviation, but what is "GMT"?

What kind of bass is this?

My apologies for the thread necromancy, but I have some answers and wanted to provide them for anyone else looking:

GMT, as far as I've been able to research, stood for Gallien Martin Taylor. I'm guessing those are the folks that helped the first amps come together. Later, Robert Gallien teamed up with a former co-worker at Hewlett-Packard, Rich Krueger, and the GMT amps started saying "Gallien-Krueger" under GMT on the amps. Eventually they dropped the GMT and the company became just Gallien-Krueger. There's more history about it if you google, such as how he made the amp Santana used at Woodstock, etc..

I started researching this because I was trying to figure out what Dez Cadena played while in Black Flag. The only pics I found of his amp was circa '81 and it looked to be a GMT 300G. If anyone can confirm that, it'd be awesome. I have pics, but I can't read the model # in them and there's so little info about GMT amps out there that I can't be sure its not a 400G or something.

The bass being played in that picture of "Panic", the pre-Black Flag band, is a Kay SG bass copy, like the one here, but with the bridge cover removed: http://www.bass-guitar-museum.com/bass-2827-1960-s-Vintage-Kay-SG-Copy-Short-Scale-Bass

His band has some upcoming dates: 7/27 in Los angeles, 8/9 in Long beach, and 8/16 at the Smell in Los angeles. I plan on attending at least one of these gigs. He emailed me the dates:

"In august the week before FYF we play TH in Long Beach at Alex's (includes Against the Grain from Detroit and Fatso Jetson), Friday at the Smell in downtown LA (Includes Akyinni and Secret Society in Smaller Lies from NOLA) and Saturday at the HOOD in Palm Desert (includes Secret Society in Smaller Lies plus TBA). Then I do a couple of days of practice with the FLAG before playing San Luis Obispo, Fresno and FYF fest in LA.
