I tried a Focus Series II and found the pre amp voicing didn't work with my bass and the Realist. The only way to really know is to borrow each of the amplifiers from another player and try them out. The sound you get from a particular rig is also dependent on the timbre of the amp and cabinet are when they are combined. In my case the Walter Woods (bright amp)combined with EA VL series cabinets (dark speaker) create a good match.

Not sure I'd do either.

I would consider auditioning the Phil Jones Suitcase or Super Flight Case with just the pickup too and see how that compares.

I didn't much like the Doubler, while it is a good amp neither Chris nor I ended up buying one after having auditioned it. He uses the Phil Jones stuff and I'm using a Focus with different preamps, not something I'd reccomend for everyone.

My experience is not good with the AMT through an amp.

Well, of course I'm gonna try them all out. The PJB looks amazing but the versatility factor of having a separate channel for a mic is enticing (AMT or DPA or whatever). I've been using a mic for a long time now and the sound is in my head. I also like the idea of just taking the head with me on tour and getting a cab along the way which pretty much rules out the PBJ. Most of my amp gigs will be something I drive to so a combo would work for me. I love the Flightcase 300 but then again, no channel for the mic and I'd have to get something to work that out. David Gage has all of this stuff I think so I could get down there with my stuff and try them out.

The Doubler is brighter and not as loud as the AI head. The AI head is dark, maybe a tad veiled but significantly louder.

Another consideration is the Headway preamp which mixes in a small box you can put in your gig bag. That's been very handy for me when I don't use an amp but go straight to the PA or when I use provided amps I'm not schlepping.

It's a 9V powered direct box with a decent EQ that mixes two sources, one of which can be a mic. It has Phantom power to apply to the XLR input if need be. I use it to mix a pickup and a mic. It's a pretty small and light box for all that it does. It's output is very hot and it can drive just about any power amp you have. More that once I've jacked it into the FX return of a rented amp to bypass the preamp of the rented amp and just use the power and speaker provided.

$290 is the going rate. I think they are worth it but that's all relative. It's not perfect, nothing ever is. I think the EQ is good but not great. The thing can be a touch noisy depending on how close you are listening. I agree with Brian Glassman who says it adds a "sheen" to the sound that isn't authentic. So far it's the best preamp I've tried for any acoustic instrument. I prefer it over the Fishman pro platinum, the baggs paradi, the Raven PMB-2.

OK, I just pored through the threads. I get it. The Headway is the thing I need first and then go from there. In fact, I've needed this thing for a decade. So, for my AMT I'd just run it through it's little black box and then into the mic channel of the Headway, then run my Realist through the other channel and wham, I got a big fat ass sound?

Hard to know until you try it. Maybe borrow Brians for an afternoon?
