Classic natural ash maple Precision bass

If the finger rest was on the G string side, the pickguards were white. The black pickguards came out then the finger rest moved to the E string side.

hmm....

how about this '75 (serial number 610xxx on the neckplate). P/G is white but the thumbrest is on the E string side.

Not sure when they were introduced, but I agree that they can look awesome. Here's my '75:

That's older than 1975, isn't it?

The thumb rest was moved to the E-string side in 1973/74 and I think the big serif letters in "Precision Bass" were changed to block letters by 1975.

I think the big letters went to medium letters in 76. As far as the thumb rest in that pic, it looks like it was moved. You can see an impression on the guard above the E string that looks consistent with the rest having been there for some time. Edit - looks like I'm seeing more than is there :D

And as far as the black guard switch, I believe it was 74/75, but I can double check in my fender book when I get home.

No, it is a '75. However, it is a replacement pickguard. It originally had a white p/g, which unfortunately, I don't have. Somebody said that the ones with the white p/g's had the tug bar below the G rather than the thumbrest above the E. That would make sense with this one.

I think I got this in '95. At that time, it already had a replacement p/g on it, but it was one of the cheaper looking torts with more black & red (rather than brown, yellow, & red). I didn't care for it, so I got a black guard for it.

I know that the '70s Fenders are hit or miss; but this one really has a nice, vintagey tone. And it's not boat-anchor heavy, either. :D
