don't know if you found a solution in the last year, but have you considered the Quilter Interbass and just using it as a preamp + cab sim (switch in Vintage position) by using the line out or headphone out (as opposed to using it as a low wattage amp using the speaker outputs)?
or if you don't mind digital and want something smaller than an HX Stomp, the Zoom MS60B has a number of preamps and cab sims built in. i've also heard the DI out on the Boss BB-1X is supposed to be sort of like a cab sim and tht it can be dialed in pretty clean.
