Double Bass Clean power

Hello,

I noticed the other day when experimenting with my Line 6 studio 110 that when powered by a 12 volt jumpstarter using a 100 watt inverter the sound was cleaner. So, being the spendthrift I am I went out and used my 10% coupon at GC and got a monster Pro 1000 power center. Yep, with that in the chain I get a nice clear sound minus most of the grittiness associated by the Line 6 110.

I am running a Wav4 thru fishmen pro preamp into the combo and have replaced the speaker with an eminence deltalite 2510 which I think has the neo magnet. It gets very loud.

Am I full of hogwash? Maybe. But to me it's one step closer.

I am a sound nut, only listen to vinyl if at all possible. As an aside, does any one know if the Line 6 amps are analogue or strictly digital or some kind of hybrid?

There's no question that AC mains power is anything but clean. The amount of dirt just varies from one location to another.

Many higher quality amps have some degree of AC line filtering built in and are able to cope with typical conditions without additional line filtering. True power conditioners could be a good thing but are fairly expensive -- usually several hundred dollars on up.

Hogwash? Probably not-- you probably do think that you hear a difference. Is there an objective, physical basis for your judgment? Not likely.

Why do you only listen to vinyl if at all possible? Yes, I know, I've heard it all. Truth be told, you likely prefer the frequency-response and other anomalies of vinyl. Your preferences are your own. No one can argue with them but be not fooled into believing that those preferences stem from vinyl providing a more faithful reproduction of the waveforms. Such is the history of hi-fi. (We can continue this by PM, if you wish).

Right on, Rob! I'd like to add that MOST amps of reasonable quality filter the mains very well. To the extent that they don't, cheap EMI/RFI filters will often do the trick. Or, you can line the pockets of the electronic snake-oil salesman and buy expensive conditioners. Bilking unsuspecting consumers in this manner just burns me. Take a look at this. When considering musical amplification equipment, much of this becomes absolutely absurd. There is no need for such amplifiers to be as quiet as, say, amps used for serious musical reproduction at home. Think about the signal-to-noise ratio at a gig!

That machinadynamica site is the weirdest site I've seen in a long time. The placebo effect must be pretty strong.

I haven't heard a line 6 studio 110, but there must be other ways of getting the sound that you want. About 20 years ago I heard a friend playing the most beautiful classical guitar pieces on the crappest guitar you've ever seen, and it sounded great. Sure, it may have sounded better on a $3000 guitar instead of a guitar that I had snobbishly dismissed as 'unplayable', but great playing always sounds great. Listen to some sounds on an old 30s recording. Really, they sound crap, its just that you love the 'vibe' or the performances.

Focus on what's important.
