Hi folks! First post, 2 weeks after getting my first bass. I know this is the n'th preamp box thread here, but please go easy on the newbie -- I did my research and couldn't find a good answer to my question.
A quick background: 1) Had 4 years of formal classical guitar training with plans to go to music school. 2) Life happened. 3) Played electric guitar exclusively for 15+ years, mostly death metal and beyond. I touched a bass for the first time 2 weeks ago (don't ask), and I still can't get over how little guitar skills transfer to bass, both when performing and for dialing in a half-decent tone.
Back on topic. I will absolutely play more metal on the bass, and I got a Darkglass Microtubes X7 for that. That pedal is a match made in heaven for me and I'm done looking for dirt. But...
I picked up the bass mostly to explore my shifting musical interests. On my To Do list I have tracks in many genres: jazz, reggae, dub, french house, funk, acid jazz... you name it.
I need a versatile EQ/preamp that can support all that. DI into my computer, no amps here because I don't want to get evicted. Also note that I'm not the least bit interested in a more fuzzy overdrive, X7 got me covered for the extreme stuff, and I don't intent to play anything in between. Not a huge fan of vintagey rock sounds.
I'm very interested in the Tech 21 Q-Strip. What do you think? Suggestions? At the same time I see people putting Sansamp BDDI + VT DI + Darkglass B7K etc back to back on their chain, which confuses this seasoned guitar player. Why is that necessary? I'm completely new to EQing a bass, so please explain like you're explaining to your grandma.
Much appreciated!
