Only way I can tolerate using a pedalboard is to have a good DI taking my pure, unadulterated bass signal to the house.

I'm pretty sure I've settled on the JDI direct box but I've not made a purchase yet and want to make sure I'm not missing some options. Hopefully cheaper!

I will run my bass into the direct box before any effects so I have a clean signal to the house, and then from the di to my pedalboard to my amp.

Am I overlooking any comparable options? I most def need an xlr out, tone shaping is not necessary-I want the purest signal I can get out of my american p bass to the house.

I guess my thinking would be the opposite. If I want to put various effects into the amp, I would want those to go to the house as well (Fuzz, echo, chorus,etc.) Therefore I would put my DI box after the other effects and right before the amp. Otherwise, you are only amusing yourself with the various modifications to your signal. I actually don't use a DI box as both my amps have a direct XLR out on the amp.

The vast majority of the places we play I barely need more than my stage volume anyway, and any place we play where that's not the case, I want my clean signal in the house. My overdrive will be plenty loud enough for ppl in the first several rows to hear what's going on!

My issue with effects of any kind is they rob my of that solid, throbbing steel rod of sound produced by my bass and amp. The effects are just for fun.

Ideally, any place large enough I will direct from the box and mic the cab and let FOH mix the signals to his taste.

I will most likely run a fulltone bass driver always on to my amp and cab with an occasional fuzz on top.

Chillax.

Your hamfisted solution to the ageold problem, guitar effects mangling the bass foundation, is due a total overhaul.

Head over to the fx forum and have a search for my blender highpass crossover loop. It takes the lows off the effects and blends them back.

Any suggestions on DI boxes? O know, I know, there are a ton of threads on DI boxes bit...

Need something to get a clean, pure bass signal to the house, and be able to have my effects on stage with me. Effects are just for fun anyway.

Leaning towards JDI direct box. And no, I can't afford a Reddi or a Firefly.

Any input is appreciated. I'm hoping I'm missing a cheaper option.

"just for fun" implies you don't think they sound good enough for the whole room to hear them, in which case you should either fix that (get effects that don't rob the low end) or leave them at home.

(most bass players with effects or more "colored" amp tones are having the opposite fight, trying to keep the soundguy from bypassing their entire hard-earned rig for a straight dry bass sound!)

Just for fun means I don't think they are necessary but are fun to play with. I always want a nice thick bass signal going to the house. If its a big enough place, we mic the cab as well as having the straight dry signal. Smaller joints won't need to mic the cab.

And I got a sansamp to take care of me. It allows me a parallel out to my cab, and I have lots of control over the signal going to the house.

I can totally agree with this! I have a Digitec BP355. It is so much fun to play with. It gives me limitless options. However I can never get the same quality of tone that I do with out it :(
