Cleaning Musicman Necks...

Hey Guys,

Bought a 'Ray about 6 months ago and the neck is starting to get a little dirty. Not really bad, but enough for me to dislike it. Just curious what you guys use to clean the necks of your Stingray, or any other bass that has a similar oil finished neck.

I've heard a few people use lemon oil, just want to know if it is actually any good for the neck.

Also, i was going apply some Warwick lemon wax on it after to try and 'seal' it a little bit so to speak. Does that work?

Just curious as to what you guys use...

I clean my satin finish neck SR's with a fine piece of steel wool or a kithen pot scourer (you are an Aussie - the green ones you get at the super market!) and then give it a couple of doses of lemon oil.

It works a treat!

I don't clean my necks anymore. It adds mojo , but I agree with Rocksolid, the scotch pads are great for cleaning them.

If you don't mind me askin' where abouts did you pick up your ray? I'm looking for around for one, but can barely find any except for Allans and BC.

Rocksolid, are we talking the same finish here, mine is a brand new 2010 Ray, so it has, well barely even has a finish on the neck. Its the very light finish they use on them, like and oil or something? Oh and I know what a kitchen scourer is too!

Do you use your lemon oil with the scourer? Does the steel wool scratch the neck at all?

Dubista, bought mine from BC if you were wondering. Wasn't cheap, and the prices just went down even more i think. But I had some money saved from gigs, and some given to me on my 21st this year so i figured I'd lash out a bit. Get exactly what you want and so worth it.

And also, I didn't want a Black/Black Ray, so I bought new. I'll try post a pic if i have one.

There always seems to be a few for sale on ebay. Or better yet, buy Rocksolid's Ray (if its still for sale...) (I've seen it on ozbass Rocksolid ;p)

Very very fine sandpaper or 3M pad, then Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish, followed by the B-C Gun Stock Wax. This is what EBMM uses and recommends. Works great. You can maybe get it at a local gun shop, or through Amazon (I just ordered replacement bottles the other day).

Didn't subscribe to this thread so I missed all the questions!

Re the scotch pads - I use them dry on the neck. I just put the coats of Lemon oil on after I have cleaned the neck.

If you get coarse steel wool it could scratch the neck - the fine stuff. Like a steelo pad or something of similar gauge.

I picked my bass up 2nd hand. I had a black maple SR for a decade or so, sold it but then regretted it so I got another one. Now that I'm not doing a heap of rock covers at the mo it's on the block for sale as said above Plus I want a new bike!!

Use some Murphy's oil soap for a maple fretboard, or lemon oil if it's a rosewood neck. You could also use some very fine steel wool. Don't saturate your neck with the diluted oil soap....make sure you dry it off immediately. Once you've cleaned it, I would follow up with the Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil and Wax like Spufman said.

When applying the Tru-Oil, you may want to do several coats...especially if it's never been treated. You could hand rub the oil on...leave it for about 5 minutes, then wipe it with a clean t-shirt/rag. Follow this step 2 or 3 more times, and then you're ready for the wax. Wipe some wax on, and let it sit for about 5 minues, and wipe it off with a clean rag....that's it! Make sure you wear some gloves when working with the Tru-Oil...it can get sticky. When disposing of...you'll want to douse the rag (you wiped the oil on) with water, as it's flammable.
