Majorly GASing for one of the these right now!

I haven’t managed to found many reviews or sound clips of the new ones but I have found this YouTube channel which I think features someone playing an older model.

Are there any owners of the newer models on here? How is the tone?
Looks like on the G&L website hey they don’t do a 5 string version but they do do a 5 string L2500, can you get a similar tone out of that?

Yes, you can get a very similar tone in an L-2500 if you choose the neck pickup, it's in the exact same place as the L-1000 pickup. The L-1000 has 3 switch positions that are not exactly the same as the L-2500.
G&L made about twelve L-1005 basses, the 5 string version of the L-1000. Here's a couple I had.

I have a CLF L-1000 (burst/okoume/rw) and a CLF L-2000 (CAR/basswood/maple). I love the feel of the necks, and they both sound great. I've been very tempted to add OMG capacitors to the L-2000, it would make it sound more vintage. The L-1000 already has that capacitor so it's good to go.

The CLF models use the same pickups and electronics as the normal versions, so the tone isn't different unless you believe the body and neck woods can affect the tone!

You can’t go wrong with G&L.
For years I’d heard how good they were but never saw one hanging up in a store to try out. Then, I found an L2000 Tribute and after plugging it in realized that everything I’d heard about them was true.
Bought one a few months later and only got rid of it when I bought a USA L2000...maybe the nicest one made.
The bad thing about it?
It ruins almost every other bass for me.
The good thing?
I’ll just buy another G&L.

If you need five strings, the L2500 will do everything you want and more.
