Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew what the fingerboard on this bass is. In a video comment a guy said it was a "bocote" fingerboard? Not sure what that is..

I wasn't fan of red basses when I bought that one but I'd been thinking about Jimmy's basses for some time and was planning on ordering one. I called to discuss getting one built and he had the the dakota red bass in stock. He offered me a 48 hour trial and needless to say it stayed. The only bass I've bought since I got the LG5, last November, was the KBP-5. If the used bass market was any better I'd sell my remaining two four strings, a 71 Fender franken pj and a nash jazz, and get a bound and blocked LM-5. Maybe next year.

PS Not only did Ken get the first post on PartV but he also got one of my favorite Fender colors in his new LG5. Congrats Ken that bass is a beauty. I've always loved surf green. It was torn between that and oly white when I got my red LG5 but I just couldn't pass up on the instant gratification.
I talked with Jimmy a couple of days ago
First off he told me he has more hundurian rosewood witch tonally he described as " the lows of the Brazilian with a extended top end"
He also talked about a rosewood that I forgot the name of maybe its this"Bo cote" that Jin is talking about in the clip.

This is probably in one of the previous AC threads, but which 4 string model has 70s placement? I'm looking for a nice crunchy, burping, funky j tone to round out the arsenal and I'm pretty much up in the air between ACs and Sadowskys, though I don't have any personal experience with either yet.
Or, just have Jimmy build what would be called an LM-4 (if you didn't want the blocks and binding of the modern), or the alder body and glossy neck finish of the RA-4.

+1 The Modern would be the one that is closest to what most people think of when talking about a 70's style J... ash body and maple neck.
Agreed. The RA is cool because it's faithful to the earlier 70's config with the Alder body... such as the '72, which I believe it's modeled after. However, he does not have an off-the-shelf 4 string model that has the same wood combo as the later 70's config (ash body), which would be a special order of an LM-4 like you say.

I get confused on his models also (much less all the subtle changes that Fender went through over the years)!. I briefly talked to Jimmy a couple days ago to get the scoop on that LG before I took the plunge, and he said that he should have a new, updated website up soon. I assume that will clarify the 'stock' models, etc., etc.
Well guys it was something else, just a great gig. The bass felt really great and dialing in tones throughout the night was really awesome. I went passive on a couple of tunes just to see what it was like. Just unreal, clear, focused but grindy at times. And the slap tone is just to die for I was able to thumb my way through tunes that I never could before.
It was a little bit of work taming the beast at times due to my lack of experience but I think I got that part down pretty good by the end of the night.
I told a few guys (11 pieces) that I had a new bass, the others had no idea since most of the other basses I play are white with tort. I got that crinkled nose !@$ YA face from the horn players as to say that's killin', not knowing it was the bass not me that was different.
I have to say for the last ten years or so have been looking for a bass to replace my '73 jazz that I had for a good time. I sold it because the refret that was needed would have lowered it's value and the neck was slightly twisted. Since then being able to play a number of 60s basses (never owned) I have always been looking for a bass that sounded and felt like the early 60's basses with a bit of an edge to it.
It seems I was looking for the wrong thing because this LG-5 is better then any Fender I ever played.
It is just fitting that I was born in '73, my first Fender was a '73 Oly white (more like yellow) and now my LG-5 is serial #73.
I am spending the rest of day taking photos of the basses I am planning on selling.
It was some odd circumstances that allowed this bass to pass through at least 6 different owners in a little over a year!
