Club Clement (Part 5: Post your basses here)

I caused a ruckus in the store since nobody had ever seen a bass like this and they all wanted to know what kind it was and where I got it. I literally had 10 people around me asking about it and marveling at how nice it is. I only hope that everyone that works in the place isn't playing it right now while it is getting adjusted :)

Haha, I've had a similar experience with mine with a little more awkwardness thrown in :p. I took my Clement to a local music shop to try some amps and as people walked through the basses section of the place they'd slow their pace and eventually stop to just stare at the bass, lol. Occasionally, they'd glance at me and then back to the bass. Eventually, either they or I would say something to break the silence and I'd tell them about the bass and the man behind it :). It happened at least 5 times that day, haha.

True, but its a popular body style for Tom. He might be able to use it. He's a good guy. Why not email him and see if its a possibility?

I've had the same happen to me. Playing these basses out just gets me a lot of attention. Especially after they hear them plugged in. Haven't played the Phoenix out yet, but there others have attracted massive attention. And especially my little Spitfire, the Tundra 4-string. She looks so simple yet has such a massive sound. If I had to choose one bass to keep - God forbid - it would be my hand-signed Tundra. She's just amazing.

This happens to me all the time, also. Every where I go with my "C" basses someone, from somewhere, when I least expect some one walks up to me and says, "Wow" "That is just gorgeous" " that bass sounds and looks awesome" "A 6 string bass? I aint never saw one before, sure looks nice" " I dont usually like coffee tabl basses but that on sure is pretty", and on and on they go.
I have been blessed to have these 2 "Clement hand built customer for me basses 122 and 196.

Godsbassman, I love #196. Your bass is quite possibly going to end up being the template for the bass that Tom builds for me. I love the nordy fat stacks and that Anne body. Do you have any sound clips of that one by any chance? I would love to hear it. Or if you have any ideas that would maybe help me out, wood changes or electronics changes that you could recommend?

Thanks. As a matter of fact, #196 has ended with Bart M56C pickups, neck volume 1 meg pot, and bridge volume pot 500K to jack with a .047 capacitor across the jack terminals. The Barts are wired each internally in series but in parallel to each other and the jack. I am going to try a switch for each control to switch inner/outer single coil / dual coil modes using 2 SPDT switches. She brings out deep dub to bright piano tones passively this way.
The woods are just fine as they are; would not change that. Less than 8 lbs!! The Fatstacks were nice but the Barts are more versatile IMHO and more aggressive or polite depending on the amp EQ and bass volume knob positioning. You know what? Drats after all this I realize this is the new specs for #122. Will post another about #196 soon. Sorry - this must be for somebody. OOOOps.:confused::hiding:

Thanks man. That sounds cool, but I just don't understand bass guitar electronics as much as a lot of you guys do. I just play haha. I guess you would recommend the barts over the nordy pups. I get that part and that helps at least. Thanks man. I am going to shoot tom an email to ask about some electronics options.

OK. Fatstacks replaced by EMG 45 CS active pickups but no preamp with V/V/T setup. I remember the Fatstacks are good but just did not nail my ears. I would not use "Fats" with Flats which #196 has TI flatwound strings. Just wasn't my combo. Other than that it is the same as Tom built it for me.

Okay. Ive got you. I am still trying to figure out what I want to do. But I do like 196.

Question to you guys that have Clements with active preamps. The more I play mine the more I'm thinking about just ordering my custom passive but I've always liked active basses. My question is, are there any big tonal differences between the active and passive modes? Of course, there's a bit of a volume dip but besides that?

Yep- I had the same reaction when I brought good ol #94 in for a set-up a while back, I had a bunch of people coming up and checking her out!

I gotta think #94 has the most different woods of any Clement:

1-Swamp ash body
2-black accent veneer
3-burled redwood top
4-cocobolo fretboard
5-bubinga neck core
6-wenge neck stringers (nice thick ones!)
7-walnut-neck outer pieces

You can talk about hippie sandwiches all you want, I've got the whole freakin hippie smorgasbord!!!
