The VTC is a pretty simple device. The Sadowsky tone circuit places the volume and pan in front of the preamp. That is, pickups -> pan -> volume -> preamp (with bass?treble) -> output.

The VTC is a passive tone. It serves as a preamp bypass (active/passive) switch) via a push-pull and a tone knob in passive mode. It's not really any different than a tone knob on any passive bass.

That doesn't negate it's brilliance in any way though. It is good to have if you ever use passive mode, but IMO, the beauty of it is how the passive tone and the active treble boost interact. You can boost the active highs to get a really bright, articulate sound and - at the same time - use the passive tone to polish the shrill, harsh top off that bright tone. I am not explaining perfectly, but it is a very cool thing. One of my favorite things about the Sadowsky magic.

Yeah, I've played a couple NYC's and a few Metro's, and my old Nordy had a Sadowsky preamp with a VTC...My Fodera has a vintage tone control as well. I was just curious about the older "Tokyo" series basses, pre-metro. I have a Tokyo UV5 on its way to me at the moment, so I was curious as I forgot to ask the seller.

To the panel of experts:

Having sold the Q5, I have looked at a lot of options. I have ran across some excellent basses of different makes, and I have a lot of thoughts.

One is the "UV" basses. They look great, but I have never actually played one. To those more in the know, I would appreciate your thoughts on a few things:

1. They seem to almost always be heavier than a standard or MV/RV. Have others found this to be universal?

2. I know the neck is bound, but does it otherwise feel the same in terms of profile, etc.?

3. Is the bridge PU in a different position?

Any other comments are also appreciated.

Hi Charles,

I had a UV70 5 and an MV5JJ. My answers to your questions would be:
1. My UV70 was just a couple of ounces heavier than my MV5. Do not know if this is typical.
2. UV70 neck is gorgeous! Mine was white binding, white blocks, maple FB. It felt thinner and wider than the MV5 but I don't have any measurements and all on line evidence is that they are the same.
3) bridge pickup is nearer the bridge by something like 1/2" or 3/4". It had HC pickups and my MV5 has SC so I cant do a direct comparison. I didn't like the UV70 bridge sound but I do like the MV5 bridge sound. (This is why I sold the UV70 to get an MV5).

1.) They have full sized bodies.
2.) I think so.
3.) Yes, by 1/2" per the Fender "70's" spec.

Just keep in mind, while these are designed to somewhat approximate a 70's J, they're still Sadowsky basses and will have that same (wonderful) character, so don't expect them to be a 100% faithful dupe of that spec. Just Roger's take on it (as usual).

I have owned several over the years. This is my current NYC V4...Oly white with a subtle flame maple board and ebony blocks. I have always found their work meticulous and the quality of his Metro line is second to none.

Hey all, opened the back plate to rewire my new RV5 NYC blend pot and was kind of surprised at the new preamp module. I'm sure this has been addressed ad nauseam, but I do notice my new RV5 (with flats) seems much brighter and less fat than my other RV5's - NYC and Metro both strung with Sadowsky blues and single coils.
Am I smokin something funny here?
